We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Holmes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
Don’t listen to old people. You don’t need to go to school or have professional training for anything. If you want to make something, make it. Ideas are free. Anyone can write a movie. You just have to stay consistent, which shouldn’t be hard if it’s your true passion, and stay true to yourself and your art. But mostly have fun and make something cool.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a kid I was always obsessed with toys. From Ninja Turtles to Mighty Max to Power Rangers, I collected it all. My collection only grew as an adult and once social media came around I started experimenting with taking pictures of my toys. I was instantly hooked and would bring my camera and an action figure everywhere I went. That quickly grew into giving a try at stop motion. I’ve always loved stop motion movies as a kid. King Kong was one of the first films I remember watching. All I knew about stop motion was you shoot one frame of the movie at a time. 24 frames per second. Like the slowest possible to make a movie, but there was something about watching these monsters and puppets come to like that looked insanely cool. I had to learn. Through a ton of trial and error and constantly learning from my mistakes, I started making little shorts with my horror action figures and people seemed to like it so I kept at it. Years later and I’ve got to work with some awesome people and some of my favorite bands and still spend most of my time playing with toys and making art and having fun doing it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My friends and I are pretty low maintenance. Our perfect night out would be going to the cinema. Maybe eat food. Definitely get coffee. I can’t think of many things I like more than drinking coffee and watching a new movie in theaters for the first time. I do have a favorite local coffee shop called Rad Coffee. Locations in Upland and Covina CA. Great punk and horror themed coffee joint. Check it out!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My childhood was filled with great movies and music and I have parents to thank for that. They raised me on The Beach Boys, The Zombies, The Beatles and all the best 60’s bands. My Dad showed me films like Halloween, Child’s Play, and Puppet master at a very young age. I’ve been a horror fan ever since. Thanks Dad!
