We had the good fortune of connecting with Kellie Sun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kellie, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One thing about my industry that outsiders are probably unaware of is the complexity of designing for accessibility and sustainability—two areas that often seem straightforward but are anything but.

For instance, when creating systems for small businesses, many assume that adopting technology is as simple as providing a user-friendly interface. However, a large portion of mom-and-pop shop owners belong to a generation less familiar with digital tools. Designing solutions that feel intuitive for this demographic requires deep empathy, extensive research, and a commitment to ongoing education. It’s not just about building the system—it’s about ensuring users feel confident and empowered to use it.

In the wellness space, especially when it comes to sustainability, most people don’t realize how limited the market is when it comes to truly eco-friendly materials and processes. Designing sustainable solutions isn’t just about the final product; it’s about scrutinizing every step of the supply chain, from sourcing ingredients to packaging, and finding ways to minimize environmental impact. It’s a constant balancing act between what’s achievable today and what we’re working toward for the future.

These challenges make the work more rewarding, as they push us to innovate and think critically about the impact of our solutions. Whether in technology or wellness, the behind-the-scenes effort to create something meaningful often goes unnoticed, but it’s what makes the work truly impactful.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career has been an incredible journey of learning, growth, and creating solutions that make a real difference. I started with a passion for human-centered design and a deep belief that good design can transform lives. Over the years, I’ve worked on projects ranging from supporting small businesses with accessible digital systems to creating wellness products that prioritize sustainability and health.

One of the achievements I’m most proud of is designing systems for over 4,000 small businesses across the United States. Many of these were mom-and-pop shops whose owners were unfamiliar with digital tools. Creating intuitive, accessible solutions that helped them thrive in an increasingly digital economy was challenging, but it was also incredibly rewarding. These efforts not only empowered entrepreneurs but also contributed to the broader U.S. economy by driving growth and creating jobs.

Currently, as the Director of Design at Erbal, I’m focused on developing wellness solutions that align with our mission of sustainable living. One of the hardest challenges has been designing truly sustainable products in a market that lacks sufficient options for eco-friendly materials and processes. Despite these obstacles, my team and I are deeply committed to creating products that are good for both people and the planet. It’s this dedication to making a positive impact that drives everything we do at Erbal.

The journey hasn’t been easy. From navigating complex design problems to overcoming personal and professional setbacks, there have been plenty of challenges along the way. I’ve learned the importance of resilience, adaptability, and staying true to my values. These lessons have shaped not only my career but also the way I approach every project and opportunity.

What I want the world to know about me and my story is that success isn’t just about what you achieve—it’s about the impact you create. Whether it’s helping small businesses succeed or encouraging healthier, more sustainable lifestyles, my work is always driven by a desire to make things better. At Erbal, we believe that even small, thoughtful changes can lead to a healthier planet and healthier lives.

I hope my story inspires others to pursue their passions, overcome challenges, and create work that makes a difference. The path isn’t always easy, but when you focus on what truly matters, the journey is worth it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had to show someone an unforgettable experience, I’d take them to Malibu Point Dume. It’s one of my favorite spots to connect with nature and take in the beauty of the outdoors.

Start the day with a scenic hike along the trails, where you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the coastline, cliffs, and Pacific Ocean. Keep an eye out for wildlife—you might spot seals, dolphins, or even whales during the migration season! After the hike, head down to the beach for some snorkeling in the clear waters. It’s an incredible way to observe marine life and appreciate the natural beauty of the area from a different perspective.

Point Dume offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to recharge and connect with nature. Whether it’s the panoramic views, the vibrant underwater world, or simply the peace of being surrounded by natural beauty, Point Dume is a place that never fails to inspire.
