We had the good fortune of connecting with John Brosio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My first thought was that I didn’t want to do this! I was originally into astronomy, cosmology, herpetology, and film. I pursued all of this to the extent I could, drawing on the side the whole time, and anyone I met always nudged me toward painting and drawing.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My early aspirations to film can definitely be seen in my work. Everything from the Wizard of Oz to Star Wars can be seen in the corners of what I do and it looks perhaps like surreal arrangements from movies that do not exist.

And many of them are allegories whether people can decode it or not.

Initially, I set out to paint tornadoes – I have always been fascinated by them and even went storm chasing for several years out of Texas. It eventually culminated in a show at the National Academy of Sciences and the famous storm chaser Tim Samaras was invited by the NAS to speak of his adventures in conjunction with the show.

As far as proud, I’d have to say that it is mainly just sticking with it. It is so easy to confront notions of relevance or frivolity in the arts if one is really, truly not trying to realize something they themselves need to experience. There is no way around the fact that this drive and this one goal are the only things that will lead to any success in art.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh wow – this is a tall order!

I would take them to a movie at the Chinese Theater IMAX.

I would take them to have french dip sandwiches at Phillippe’s.

I would take them to a Dodger game, the Queen Mary, whale watching, the Getty museum, the Norton Simon museum, and Olvera street to shop.

I would take them down Broadway in dtla at night where Bladerunner was filmed.

I would take them through Union Station and perhaps on a train ride to San Diego overnight.

(or Santa Barbara)

Musso and Frank, Frolic Room, and Polo Lounge would all be on the list.

And if Halloween time I would take them to some of the amazing Haunted Houses and displays in the San Fernando Valley.

If Xmas and New Year’s, I would take them to the Rose Parade and Langham hotel.

I could keep going!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In any success there is always luck. I had extremely supportive parents and there was no way they were not going to get me the best education possible. I was encouraged to try things, ask questions, and my very curious nature was always engaged.

I also have a large and long standing group of friends – some of them all the way back to elementary school. It feels like an ongoing conversation from day one!

And lastly, all of the teachers out there. Many of your readers can probably thing of key teachers in their past and these will always be, to a degree, the unsung heroes of any story.
