We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Westphal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brooke, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
There is really no other option for me! As I continue to grow as a person and as an artist, I’ve become increasingly aware that living a creative life is integral to my existence. I love to tell stories and create memorable experiences for people. With filmmaking, I can combine those two loves into one, for both the cast and crew on set, and for the audiences watching the final film.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There are a lot of different questions in there, so I will just dive in. I am just starting my career(s), and that really excites me. I graduated from UC Santa Barbara exactly a year ago (June 16th, 2024), and today I find myself 6 months into living in sunny Los Angeles. I feel lucky that I am pulled to explore so many creative endeavors, from filmmaking and event production to singing/songwriting, playing the piano, designing jewelry, and writing. I have a feeling that professionally, my career will mean many different things throughout my life.

My creative instincts are what have allowed me to overcome many of the challenges I’ve faced in 22 years. While healing from a third major concussion, I quit the Division I water polo team during my second year and changed my major to Film and Media Studies. In 2023, while I was writing my first short film, Young People, I was reflecting on the bottled emotions I’d tucked away after losing my cousin a few short years ago. During the first stages of the pandemic, I started a successful jewelry company from my room. When I was cheated on in high school, I poured my emotions into the piano and sang my voice hoarse. Using my creative outlets to make sense of the changing world around me is instinctual. I feel very grateful for that.

What do I want the world to know about me? My name. I’ll figure out the rest later.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have no idea! I’m the one who needs the recommendations. I’m new to LA.

Ok fine, here are a few notable places I’ve discovered I love:
– The strawberry cold foam matcha from Verve. Shoutout Verve. Yum.
– Elephanté. Bye-bye paycheck! Hello, whipped eggplant.
– Tenants of the Trees
– Salt and Straw.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to my friends, family, and partner who inspire, motivate, and encourage me every day to achieve my goals and aspirations. I would not be the person I am today without their love and support.
