Meet Slater Cane | Business Owner & Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Slater Cane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Slater, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
For me, it really comes down to mindset and the experiences I’ve had with the customers who truly believe in what I’m building. There have been plenty of times when someone hears the price of one of my pieces and laughs at the thought of spending that kind of money on something I made. Meanwhile, they’re wearing a $300 Patagonia puffer that was produced overseas for cents on the dollar.
Moments like that can be discouraging. It’s easy to question yourself or even think about giving up. But when that happens, I remind myself why I started this in the first place. My mission is to create the most premium, American-made provisions I possibly can, pieces built to tell stories, to age with their owners, and to be passed down for generations.
Over time, I’ve learned that when someone says, “Wow, that’s way too expensive,” what it really means is that they’re simply not my kind of customer and that’s okay. The price reflects the most honest and fair price I can make it while staying true to the quality, the materials, and the fact that it’s made right here in the USA.
So I trust my gut and stand my ground. Cheap things aren’t good, and good things aren’t cheap.
And sure enough, the next thing you know, someone who perfectly matches the kind of customer I built this brand for stumbles across it and happily drops $600 on one of my Pioneer Coats without flinching. There’s something incredibly inspiring about that moment when a complete stranger believes in you, your work, and the brand you’ve built.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Wild Cane Supply Co. is built around adventure, craftsmanship, and creating gear that lasts a lifetime. The brand was founded on the belief that quality gear leads to quality experiences, and that the things we carry and wear should be built to endure the life we live in them. Instead of chasing trends or producing disposable fashion, the focus is on designing premium, small-batch provisions made in the USA that are built with integrity, timeless style, and attention to detail. Inspired by a lifestyle of surfing, fishing, off-road exploring, and time spent outdoors, every piece is meant to be used, broken in, and passed down. At its core, Wild Cane Supply Co. is about living adventurously and creating honest gear that tells the story of the people who wear it and the places it takes them.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Brass Tacks Provisions, a brick-and-mortar shop out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, deserves a special place in my brand’s story. They were the first to give me a wholesale opportunity I’ve had and for the most high-end piece I’ve ever made, the Pioneer Coat. That kind of belief early on means everything when you’re building something from the ground up. They took a chance on my work, and because of that, I’ll always be grateful. To this day, I still have a great relationship with the owner, which makes that moment even more meaningful.
