We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Solberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I think habits are everything, because they are what fill our lives with actions, emotions, and experiences from moment to moment. As an artist who also grew up as an athlete, I feel fortunate to have many habits which are not ordinary in my field. Some of these have worked against me (to name one: trying too hard), but a lot have enabled me to stick around in a tough industry. I naturally want to be and feel healthy all the time, so my habits there are to be outside, eat well, exercise – all these things affect my work in a major way. It’s not like the romantic vision of the starving artist- living off scraps and drinking and smoking all day. When I was younger I used to think that was cool and ride that “image” based way of artist life, but the true me always came out and made me run 10 miles in the morning if I happened to be hungover or something. My habit of being healthy has allowed me to have perseverance and a positive mindset amongst all odds. I believe a lot of the art world success, if you’re interested in the long game, is to take care of your self, thereby naturally finding a way to continue making work. Eventually people notice.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I always knew I was an artist and have always been determined enough to make it my profession. My work throughout the years has evolved and changed as most art does- I have allowed it to breathe like a natural form. I believe that one can always sense my hand in my work though despite what it looks like, and this is crucial to my career path as an artist. In order to accrue value and validation in any field, one must note a sort of consistency in the body of work. For me this happens to be more energetic than anything else. Being that energy is something you feel and do not see, my body of work has been cultivating and slowly growing over time. My career has involved a lot of hard earned patience. I suppose for me being genuine to my self and inherently creating from that space is what is most important.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My LA experience involves first and foremost something that doesn’t really exist in this city- walking! Experiencing LA via foot or public transportation is key to really feeling the pulse here. The only big drive I am sure to make happen is to the beach- Zuma, Matador, or someplace in Malibu. Usually this also involves a hike at Los Leones. In non-Covid times I am sure to do a tour of great dive bars and restaurants as well. I love tacos from Guisados in Boyle Heights, sunset at Soho Warehouse DTLA, and then Tony’s afterward. Another good circuit is Konbi, Bar Calo, Honey Hi, El Prado, and Cafe Stella. I love walks in Elysian Park and introducing people to my hawk friends there who I have been observing over the last 10 years! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m most grateful to my family and friends. There are certain collectors and organizations who have also consistently supported me throughout the years. All these entities who have championed me through thick and thin, through all periods of my career, mean everything to me.
