Meet Evan Wecksell: Comedian / Songwriter / Podcaster

We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Wecksell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evan, why did you pursue a creative career?
My decision actually came from a college professor while I was taking a sports marketing seminar at NYU. I had graduated college and just wrapped up an internship at the National Hockey League with no idea what to do next. During the seminar’s final presentation I spoke about WNBA agent representation, but used hand puppets and silly voices. The professor didn’t care about the content of my presentation, she just wanted me to get on the stage. Once that possibility entered in my head, it seemed natural and it was a downhill pursuit. The decision to be continue to be creative now has taken on a bigger significance. With so much sensitivity and canceling going on in response to art, humor and the written word, the reception that awaits new artists has never been harsher. But that’s why you pursue it: to bypass the noise and express your artistic vision.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art has sprouted branches over the years. When I started comedy in 2002 my main purpose was to get up on stage as much as possible, and only develop a voice on stage for stand-up gigs only. Then it progressed to, okay, I want to do stand-up gigs, but now get paid and I want to get paid at the most fun locations, which was the college market. So I toured heavily, earned my frequent flyer statuses and headlined in 48 states. There were some quick TV appearances, but the best things about my career have been how my comedy/creativity spilled into other arenas. In 2014, I filmed my 2-year-old son name WWE wrestlers just off the first few seconds of their entrance. I’m a huge wrestling fan so for this video to go viral and get my first taste of true notoriety which very special for me. As a NY sports fan, I stay connected by listening to WFAN sports radio. In 2017, I wrote a song about a host there and was actually invited to play a comedy song on a sports talk station live on the Jersey Shore. So when I can get worlds to collide that’s a big deal for me. Another big pursuit is I have a podcast “Socially Awkward with Evan Wecksell” where I interview a different Facebook friend every episode. It’s a great opportunity to reconnect and meet those random Facebook friends for the first time. So I guess the lesson I’ve learned from all this is that everyone’s path is different and if you can follow your passion and stay professional and persistent, you know you are going in the right direction. Getting no’s are part of the business and should be expected, but that’s not the destination, that’s part of the journey.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m not sure where we would go. I’m used to going out with friends and then we eventually just show each other stuff on our phones. Just kidding, I don’t go out much, and my best friend is my wife. Our itinerary would be stay home and finish Schitt’s Creek. You want me to go out? Our state is pretty closed. If a friend arrives, we’ll get back on a plane and fly to Florida. There’s beaches and Disney there. That should do it. And I would go on Space Mountain and the Aerosmith roller coaster about 8 times in a row. Food would be good Sushi, Chinese or Chipotle if I don’t want to eat for the next 12 hours. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife Actress / Writer / Singer Kelly Meyersfield. She got me to move out here and pursue my dreams beyond living in my parents’ house.
