Meet Honey Blu: Singer/ MC/ Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Honey Blu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Honey, what do you want people to remember about you?
I want people to know that my mission is fighting for the liberation of the African Nation and African people throughout the diaspora. Whatever ways I can help build Black Power domestically and internationally, then I will be apart of the movement to make that happen.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is my creative expression. Expression is how I release, process and interpret my emotions. Directly from my spirit, I express my creativity in the form of song, dance, poetry, writing and teaching. What sets me apart from other artist is my versatility. I don’t believe I am just an artist, I believe that my art is merely a form of communication to get certain messages across. I use my art as a tool and not just for fame, clout or capital. A friend of mine once told me: Art is the language of the soul and music is the voice of God…that’s why music has the ability to shift and move people entire trajectory of thought and action. My mission is to inspire through my creative expression, God, My parents, Family, and Support System are a huge part of how I came to be where I am. I have always been surrounded by a supportive family and I am very thankful for their constant love, encouragement and faith in me to be the best at whatever I choose to do. I am thankful for my dad taking me to his shows and studio sessions at a young age and helping me understand the process of making great music along the way. It wasn’t always easy, as I struggled with depressive episodes growing up due to my father being incarcerated when I was younger and experiencing major social anxiety when I got out of high school. I overcame these challenges by literally placing myself in situations that were uncomfortable and frightening to me in order to overstand my fears. I’ve learned along the way that nobody is going to more excited than you about what you achieve because only you understand the amount of blood, love, sweat and tears you put into your craft. You have to really believe that you can over come any obstacle because God won’t Gove you anything you can’t handle. My grandma taught me best! I want everyone to know, that everything I create is a genuine expression of my soul, my spirit and my journey. Welcome to my world!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well we definitely have to hit up Leimert Park, which is what I like to describe as the Harlem Renaissance of LA. African(Black) Artist, Rappers, Dancers, Writers, Actors, Chefs, Bushinesses, Designers. I mean if you need it and want it Black owned you gotta go to Leimert Park. PERIOD! We also gotta stop a Simply Wholesome and get some Jamaican patties and herbs for the go…also Black Owned! Then we can hit Kenneth Hahn Park for a nice walk and eat our food at the park and later walk it off. We can also hit up Self Realization Fellowship: Lake Shrine to do some meditation, reflection and get some time for peace in there. Then on the way back home we can stop in Long Beach and hit up Shades Of Afrika to buy some books, incense and sea moss and even say what’s up to the New Era Long Beach family. That’s my personal itinerary!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I would like to give all praises to the Most High for guiding me along my journey towards my life purpose. Huge shoutout to my ancestors and elders for laying the down blackprint for African Unity, Black Power and Self Determination under an imperialist neocolonial empire, most widely known as amerikkka. For if not for the work of: Ella Baker, Thomas Sankara, Ruby Doris Smith Robinson, Kwame Nkrumah, Ida B Wells, Lucy Parsons, Marcus Garvey, Safiya Bukhari, Huey P Newton, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, Tupac Amaru Shakur, Afeni Shakur, Kwame Ture and countless others that have inspired me along my journey thus far I would not be where I am now; I express immense gratitude. , and give may thanks. Ase! I also want to give a major shoutout to NEW ERA LONG BEACH, NEW ERA DETROIT, and the entire NEW ERA NATION for holding the people down doing boots on the ground work every single day for the liberation and protection of our people nationally and internationally. Shoutout to The Burning Spear Newspaper & The African Black Coalition for arming me with political knowledge and fortitude as we continue the revolution. Lastly I would like to thank my parents for raising me… you guys are doing a great job ! haha AFRIKA ONWARD!
