We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Coro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is everything in my opinion. One of my biggest risks was coming to Los Angeles by myself to do what I love. Life is all about trial and error; you have to try and see if what you’re doing is what you really want to do. The key is to keep moving and never give up.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a fan of Star Wars, I was drawn to a galaxy full of stories and dreams. That made me want to dive into sci-fi and get creative on the story’s details. I like to think outside the box and use some abstract concepts in my work but still keeping the story linear. I am most proud of my latest short film “Planet I.X.” not only because it gave me the opportunity to learn from my mistakes but it opened my eyes into a larger universe which I’d love to dive into and create in the future. “planet I.X.” is now in its festival run and has been officially selected on a few festivals. I’m excited to share my story with the world, especially because it is a part of me. It wasn’t easy to get where I am right now. I had a lot of challenges starting from the writing process. Making a sci-fi is not easy, but I liked the challenge and fell in love with the making of the genre. There were a lot of obstacles in my way but seeing my film finished was the best feeling. The most important thing I learned in the making of this film was to always be organized and to make sure that your key crew members are 100% in the project and always support you and your ideas rather than bringing you down and saying things like “that’s impossible”. To make what you want, you need people working as a team and not having them as one more obstacle.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hands down, once they get out of LAX, I’d take them to eat In-n-out. I would take them to walk around Melrose ave. and to Ventura in Studio City. Also, I’d take them to a nice picture spot for the Hollywood sign and to Griffith observatory. I’d also take them to Santa Monica. It is really nice to walk around the shops and on the actual beach. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my sister, Zeida. Without her support and encouragement, I wouldn’t have discovered my love for editing and wouldn’t have gone to pursue filmmaking. Also to my whole family for always supporting me.
