We had the good fortune of connecting with Kia Harper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kia, we’d love to hear about a book that’s had an impact on you.
My all time favorite book is “You are a Badass” by Jen Sincero. I struggle with a lot of self doubt and insecurities, especially when it comes to putting my music out there. I mean, of course- I am an artist and we are sensitive about our art! This book is a witty self help book that helps you focus on how dope you really are and fuels you enough to take the risks and just go for it, no matter what you’re trying to achieve.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to believe the theme of my art is normalizing the human experience. Feeling hurt, jealous, insecure or literally out of your mind are human emotions. Everything isn’t always pretty. But its ok to be human. Really writing from a vulnerable space no matter what group of people judge me and putting out quality music no matter if it’s trendy or not- is what I strive for with every release. And I am proud of that. I’m excited to see how many more hearts I can touch when I write from a real place. Music gives me a voice and the fact that I can connect with strangers on such a personal level makes it so worth it. Was this road easy? No, not at all. A lot of sleepless nights, a lot of deleted sessions and alot of being discouraged because the people closest to me didn’t support initially. But the biggest lesson I learned is to create and put it out with no expectations. You never know who that song will reach or who it may save. And then, once persistence grows your buzz, the ones around you always fall in line.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Any time someone comes to town I take them to my favorite spot “Katana’s” because the food there is amazing and the ambiance is gorgeous. Activity wise, I love hiking at Runyon Canyon! That really clears the mind and gets your blood going. After that head on over to my favorite brunch spot which is Fratelli Cafe. That’s probably counter productive but hey- the service is always over the top along with the food so we can give ourselves a pass!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my dreams to my mom, Gina Troutman, who has everything to do with how far I’m taking this. I’ve seen her turn nothing into something my entire life and she literally gave me all the tools to really go after what I want. To my son who is the reason I don’t stop. Even when the going gets rough I know you’re watching me. Whether it’s reaching a goal or if it’s me failing and learning what I did wrong. I dedicate my journey to you because I for sure would have stopped a long time ago if I didn’t have you to do this for. And last but not least to every person who has downloaded or streamed my music. Every comment left on a video and every sweet inspiring DM I get from those who were touched by my music. I love you all and appreciate you for supporting me! I couldn’t do it without you all!
