Meet Robin Schorr | Singer/Songwriter of Blond in Car

We had the good fortune of connecting with Robin Schorr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robin, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I tend to be a worker bee and a person who likes control, so learning to take risks has been a very important evolution for me. My story is that I worked for years as a film executive and producer until I completely gave it up 4 years ago when I discovered that I was in love with writing songs. I had been a very passionate music fan all of my life but never had the courage or really the audacity to think that I could actually make music. But after working hard to climb a ladder in film for many years, I suddenly hit a wall. I didn’t want to read one more script or do it one more minute. I suddenly felt aware that film was never my true calling and that I may never know what was. I was tortured by this, until I thought that I should take guitar lessons, just for a hobby. The minute I learned 3 chords on that guitar, I started hearing songs 24/7. I couldn’t sleep. And I suddenly realized that I wanted to write songs. I was driving on Olympic, listening to Country Radio and had a thunderbolt moment – I realized that country artists work with songwriters, and that I could write songs for country artists. I came home, called my mother and said, I know what I’m going to do with the rest of my life. I closed my film company immediately and started doing everything I could to learn how to write songs. The minute I made that discovery, my whole path in music has been a reward for that initial leap of faith, as doors in music have opened in an organic, wonderful way. Writing country led to writing songs for film/TV/commercials, and in a short time my pop, R & B and Indie songs have been placed in national ads for Coke, Samsung, Bose, Lowe’s, Clorox and many more, and in TV series on Netflix, HBO, Showtime, ABC, etc. Then writing those songs led me to meet a Brandon Ferguson Moore, a young producer, who became my partner in our indie pop duo Blond in Car. I sing and write our songs and we have just released our 10th single in 10 months. It is a dream come true to be making music and the path just keeps winding forward in fun and unexpected ways.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My indie pop duo Blond in Car has got its own sound, and I am very proud of that. When you study songwriting, they say, write the music you wish existed, so that’s my north star and that’s what we do. Our music is retro but modern, super pretty but also quirky, soft but incisive. I love writing lyrics and I try to say things I’ve never heard in songs before. Which means I don’t write that many love songs. i just think there a mountains of them everywhere. I wrote “Dumped By My Best Friend” because that happened to me and, since releasing that song, I find out that it’s happened to a lot of people! I wrote “Greta On a Pedestal,” which is a fangirl song about the actress/director Greta Gerwig, about how admiration for someone you don’t know can keep you company and give you strength. It’s an unusual subject to be sure but it has become our most popular song. Our latest single, “Never Be Cold” is about the end of something so beautiful that you thought it could never end – were you wrong? where does it go? So, maybe that does count as a love song. I love making our music and am so happy that our audience is growing all over the world as people discover Blond in Car on platforms and put our music on playlists with my favorite artists. We put out a song every month, starting last May so our February song, “Never Be Cold” was our 10th release in 10 months. It’s a rigorous release schedule, and I’m proud that we have stayed on track! There are many challenges to being an independent artist, one must wear many hats and learn many different skills beyond making the music. But most of them are creative in different ways, so we try to figure out how to do everything in an authentic way and learn as we go.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love LA but it’s a hard question to answer during Covid. Of course the beach, drive Sunset to the beach and up the coast to Malibu and Zuma and take a walk. I love Runyon Canyon, it’s such a beautiful walk and so quintessentially LA. In normal times, I would always take people to Huntington Gardens, it’s a wonderful day trip and then we would eat at Pie N Burger in Pasadena. Gosh, I hope they are doing okay. I love the flea markets in LA and am a regular, so every Sunday, there is a great flea market here, from Rose Bowl to Santa Monica to Long Beach – I love them all. For a fancy meal, I like to take people to Musso Frank’s, so gorgeous and the food is excellent now. Dodger Games are a must, Chavez Ravine is a gem – particularly in summer, it’s fantastic to take people to an afternoon game and see the sun go down.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho! I am sure this book gets mentioned frequently, because it’s a life changer. I read the book when I was at a crossroads in my life and the book gave me the courage and the push to open myself to change. The theme of the book is the importance of finding one’s purpose, and that to shrink from that quest would be to die a coward, having never fully lived. I took that message to heart and am certain that If I hadn’t been buoyed by this determination to find my own true purpose, I would never have found it. Total gratitude for this inspiring and poetic book.
