We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Luckett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julia, what are you inspired by?
My inspiration stems from the intimacy of a moment, and my craft is looking at the light, the gesture, and framing to create a photograph that reflects that moment. There are so many ways we connect with each other, and my work is focused on that connection. I love the challenge of photography, as it’s rare when all the elements perfectly present themselves for a great photograph. It requires intuition and an attention to detail.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am always learning new photography techniques and pushing myself to become a better photographer. I also enjoy learning more about effective workflows, business, social media and interpersonal connection. I love the variety of skills you need to learn to run your own business, it always keeps things interesting!

I’m most proud of my ability to adapt, learn and listen.  To me, being a good photographer means always being open to the moments that will present themselves and trusting your intuition for when to take a step back or move in closer. One of the most important parts of my job is communicating with my couples and building a relationship. If you have a foundation of trust, those beautiful moments are more likely to appear.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting me in New Haven, Connecticut, I would plan a mix of activities. We would probably start with going to Sally Apizza and getting the tomato pie (without mozzarella) which is my favorite! We would go on a lot of walks around town and hike up to the East Rock overlook where you can view the city below you. I’d pack a picnic and find a quiet place in Edgerton or East Rock Park to enjoy some quiet time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Nick, has always been there to support me. From listening to problem solving to creatively brainstorming to making dinner, he has been by my side through everything.
