We had the good fortune of connecting with Duane Bowen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Duane, what inspires you?
For me, family and where I grew up (Compton, CA) has always been my biggest inspiration in life and in business. My family and My City are very prideful; we wear our name with great honor! So that definitely keeps me going. These two components are the main inspiration behind my quote “Take Pride In Who You Are, Take Pride In What You Represent”. Also, being a resource for future generations to come. Growing up in Compton, CA was never easy because there are many different factors that can play into the way your life turns out. Obviously, you can turn to the streets or you can find an outlet to keep you off of them. I made a decision to find an outlet at an early age; that was sports. So for me to be in a position one day to inspire young kids by telling my story is an ultimate goal of mine.
What should our readers know about your business?
Brick2billboard is a Streetwear brand based in Compton, Ca. We aim to speak to every individual who faces adversity. Whether internal or external, we all have a story to tell. Each piece has a symbolic meaning and message from my life. Last time we spoke, I talked about how most proud I was of the City Collection. This time around, It’s the Statement Collection, this piece launched on Juneteenth in Light of all the chaos in the world right now and to praise the solidarity within the Black community. What’s really dope to me is that our quote “Take Pride In Who You Are, Take Pride In What You Represent” is as meaningful as it’s ever been right now and the people feel it! The thing that sets us apart from everybody else is that we are a brand that aims to not only outfit the customer, but to tell a story that will resonate with him or her as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Thats a tough one, out here theres so much to do! But they are riding with me, so Im going to take them around to see a few different spots, MLK statue at the Compton courthouse, Nipsey Hussle Square, Murals around the city of Kobe and GiGi, the Watts Towers. For food, Trapkitchen, Bezbarbeque, Hawkins Burgers just to name a few.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I’d like to thank my Son! In 2017 when he was born; that really lit the fire under me to get the ball rolling, he’s too young to understand but he’s that fuel! Second, my entire family and friends for their endless support and praises! My successes have been a direct result of their engagement with the brand as much as I have. I can’t thank them enough!
