We love ourselves a good quote and so we asked our community to share their favorite quotes and affirmations with us and we’ve highlighted some below.

Kelly Love | Actor & Writer

One of my favorite quotes that has stuck with me was from actor Rob Brydon. While given advice to friend and fellow actor James Corden about how to get to the next level; he told him “You are never going to get invited to the table, so you have to invite yourself.” Read more>>

“If I had more time, I would write less.” Which I believe is an adaptation of a quote from Mark Twain. I like this quote for many reasons. Mainly it uses time to confirm that we need it to refine our work. That simplicity and focus takes time. It also has given me permission, as I’m moving fast to build a company and grow community, to not be so hard on myself. There will never be enough time to do everything! Read more>>

When the Pandemic hit, almost all of our clientele were wiped out, along with our entire business model. In an instant, there were no more bars, no more restaurants, no stadiums, concert halls, airplanes, airports, cruises. Gone. These days, the phrase “chop wood, carry water” comes up a lot. The full Zen quote is something like “Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.” This is really helping us each day to focus just on the smallest task in front of us– forget about “enlightenment” in Covid, or “making it” or really anything going your way and just chop wood, carry water. Building a business requires a little monasticism, a little discipline, a little faith, and a lot of practice, Cheers to all the small business owners out there, chopping wood, carrying water. Cathy Cooper | Artist, Musician, Maker of Things

Years ago, I was introduced OBLIQUE STRATEGIES. A set of cards created by Brian Eno and and Michael Schmidt, both great artists and thinkers. Each card in the deck has a thought, a direction that is non specific. A tool to spur and move the creative process forward. The very first card that I ever pulled stuck with me: Listen To The Quiet Voice Decades later, that direction remains with me. Cutting through the noise of doubt. Editing chaos. Discovering the joy of a simple, concise image and feeling. Existence is not as complicated as we make it. And we each make our place on this earth. To me, that is clear. Read more>>

Yasmine Mason | Doctor of Chiropractic and Fermented Food Shop Owner

Yes, a quote by motivational speaker, T. Harv Eker: “The way you do anything is the way you do everything.” This affirmation helps me give 100% of myself with everything I do. Even something as simple as putting my shopping cart back after using it at the store. If I strive to give my best with everything I do, from managing my employees, to parenting my kids, to choosing what ingredients to put in our fermented foods and drinks, there is no compromise. Only the best will do in every aspect of life. Be the best you can be, even when no one is looking. Back to the shopping cart example, merely leaving the cart in a nearby stall instead of returning it to the proper place implies that I am ok with sub-par performance. Not putting the cap back on the toothpaste tube is a similar idea. Read more>>

“We will raise each other up no matter the hardships” is a quote I go back to frequently. It’s not attributed any one person. I think I just heard it in passing at some point. I believe we should always try to help one another. We’re social creatures and the connections we make helping others and letting others help us, whether it be strangers or loved ones, is important for our the personal growth of everyone involved. Life can be difficult, espcially during times like these amidst a pandemic and increasing social injustice in our society. The quote just reminds me of how important helping and making positive connections with others is. I think this quote is directly applicable to the non-profit work we do at the Los Angeles Professional Chapter of Engineers Without Borders. Read more>>

Pete George | Stand-up Comedian, Actor, Writer

“You don’t create the things you want. You create the things you give your attention to, whether you want them or not” People can want one thing but continually focus on something else like; I’m not good enough or I don’t have what it takes or what if it does happen, then what? They usually coming from a place of fear. If that is what you focus on, then that is what you will get. People tend to look at this as a passing thought and don’t realize not only how powerful this is but how THIS is the deciding factor for success in anything. Read more>>
