We had the good fortune of connecting with Yasmine Mason and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yasmine, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
Yes, a quote by motivational speaker, T. Harv Eker: “The way you do anything is the way you do everything.” This affirmation helps me give 100% of myself with everything I do. Even something as simple as putting my shopping cart back after using it at the store. If I strive to give my best with everything I do, from managing my employees, to parenting my kids, to choosing what ingredients to put in our fermented foods and drinks, there is no compromise. Only the best will do in every aspect of life. Be the best you can be, even when no one is looking. Back to the shopping cart example, merely leaving the cart in a nearby stall instead of returning it to the proper place implies that I am ok with sub-par performance. Not putting the cap back on the toothpaste tube is a similar idea. That tiny bit of laziness, though minor, has to potential to creep into other aspects of my life. If I slack, even just a bit on the minor things, I’m likely to slack on bigger, more important things in life.
What should our readers know about your business?
I opened Fermentation Farm in 2014 knowing that fermentation was a topic that more and more people were wanting to learn about. Little did I know how many people wanted to be able to purchase quality organic fermented products and that they wanted to learn how to make these products. Over the past 6 years, my shop grew from me and 1 employee to me and 25 employees. I am so grateful for the outpouring of support from our community. Pre-Covid, we offered fermenting veggies, kombucha, bone broth and sourdough classes. We hope to offer our classes again soon. Along the way, I have learned to surround myself with people who have passion! about what we do. It is impossible for me to do 100% of everything in my business, so having talented passionate people to help me continue to grow is paramount.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
EAT: Lido Bottle Works (Chef Amy Lebrun is amazing!)/ Andrei’s DRINK: Day Dream Coffee Roasters/ 7 Leaves for Assam Tea Boba/ The Blind Rabbit for Craft Cocktails/ Matter of Craft for a beer VISIT: the beach everyday
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Sandor Katz deserves a shoutout! I learned so much from Sandor through his books Wild Fermentation and The Art of Fermentation when I started my fermentation journey in 2009. In 2017, I had the pleasure of studying fermentation with Sandor Katz at his home. He offers a fermentation residency program for those in the industry. It was so amazing to come full circle and not only meet someone who had so much to do with my success, but to spend quality time with him learning so much from his years of experience with fermentation.
