We had the good fortune of connecting with Hibaru Maywood and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hibaru, would you say you are following and pursuing your passion?
I can say I”m pursuing my passion. Because it’s really important for me to be motivated to spend my majority of time (currently my job is the one which I spend majority of time in a day). Motivation makes very concentrate, productive, and confidence. I believe it also keeps me healthy inside out if I’m motivated and productive.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Currently I’m working as a Head of global business of a cross-border fashion e-commerce service based in Tokyo Japan, to expand their business globally. It’s been 6 months and there have been a lot of challenges but I’m really enjoy it. I’m proud of myself to expand my expertise area not only the Japanese market (which I was originally from) but also United States and Global to target to work on. Last summer, I left my previous job and it was not very easy situation to find what I really wanted to do and also step my career up. There were a couple of great great opportunities from world well-known company. These jobs were all great but really narrowed and specific area to work on based on my experience in the massive organization. I felt very excited for these opportunities of course to be able to join such a huge name of organization. On the other hand, I came across this whole brand new position in current company which is very known in Japan but not globally, which was responsible to expand their cross-border fashion e-commerce to global market. There were 2 completely different prospectives at that moment, to be really specific and specialized in one skill-set but in the world-known organization or to be a head of business to expand the new business globally and take huge responsibility. I had talked with my husband, family, friends and old co-workers a lot but I ended up thinking a lot what makes me happy and motivated everyday. Those opportunities in big companies were not only focused on fashion but whole e-commerce and marketing. And I realized that I was truly loving to work on fashion. Just thinking about day to day with the job, I felt more excited about current position which nobody has ever done in current company. My challenge to figure out was, really needed to think WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY & MOTIVATED. It’s not easy because of course I needed to think about other aspects as well but that’s the most important thing to make decision. I’m often told that I’m pursuing my passion and motivation from my friends. That’s probably true and my story, and I would say it’s not easy at all but I was really thankful for that period that I’ve been thinking about my career.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
My best friend is obsessed with coffee and working in that industry (she’s in Japan). So my plan is definitely taking her the best coffee shops in LA as many places as possible! Shopping at Alternative, James Press, and Everlane. Getting Flat White at Great White and take pictures in front of Venice sign. – Silver lake to DTLA & Arts District: Coffee shops in Silver Lake | Alfred, Roo Coffee, Intelligentsia. Dinner at Bavel in Arts District (current my favorite place). Skyspace Skelton slide for the night activity. – 1 Day Malibu Trip: Brunch at Malibu Farm on Malibu Pier. Shopping at Malibu County Mart. Sunset drinks at Moon Shadow. Dinner at NOBU Malibu. – Girls’ Shopping Day: All day shopping at the glove, Beverly Center, Melrose Avenue. – Weekend gateway to Palm Springs: Stay at Sands Hotel and Spa in Palm Desert.
