We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Danhi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacob, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
I think it would be how close and loving of a community the tattoo industry is. Although it’s a very big industry, i’ve never experienced such support and love from various tattooers and shops I never thought I would have the honor of meeting. Everyone is so welcoming and humble to strangers.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Probably one of the hardest questions to ask a tattooer but I would say the way I put together designs and execute them is what separates myself from others. There are so many others I get influence from all over the world but I think my work just has an all around feel to it. At this point in my career I would say i’m the most proud that I work in a tattoo family today that supports my work and gives me the inspiration and love to do better and never give up every day. With no art background I got my start at an amazing shop that took a chance on me learning from scratch and molding me into the person I am today. It has been the hardest thing I have ever worked for, every single day you overcome challenges that can break anyone. But I just kept my head up and kept my eye on the prize no matter what. It’s not an easy business to start in of you’re not motivated and are use to taking the easy way out, you have to pay your dues and it is worth every minute to do it right. I just want anyone that is interested in getting into tattooing to understand that no matter how long it takes, it’ll all pay off in the end. It’s a respectable industry and i’ve worked so hard to get where I am today, so please do the same!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would no question take them around my hometown of the south bay part Los Angeles. I was born and raised around the beaches of hermosa, redondo and manhattan beach. There are plenty of good hiking and site seeing spots near palos verdes, plus amazing food everywhere. I’ve been fortunate enough to grow up around such a beautiful area with the most amazing friends and community that has so much history to it.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many I need to thank but the shops and tattooers I currently work with and have in the past deserve all the credit. Everyone at Black Diamond Tattoo gave me my start and paved the way for me and i’ll always remember that. All of my current co workers at Third Street Tattoo and Deep Seas Tattoo for accepting me into there family that i’ve always dreamed of being apart of and keeping me inspired every single day. All of my family members as well for all the support and love. I owe my life and career to all of you.
