We had the good fortune of connecting with John Fyke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
How important the first 5 years of development are for kids. Helio has developed a fun, educational, engaging way for parental figures to interact with their children. Our Night Light projectors create bedtime routines, and our Apps assist with phonics and cognitive recognition.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been an entrepreneur my whole life. Helio is the 4th company I have started and ran. Each business has been a n educational proving ground in itself. My first company was formed in 1997. We built websites and e-malls for radio stations. My second company focused on building wi-fi networks in apartment communities. My third venture was opening up bridal stores with my wife, which we still own and operate today. The White Dress in Corona Del Mar, CA was our first. Then we partnered up with an Israeli designer Galia Lahav to open stores in LA and Miami. Which she runs today. My last, and most current is Helio Productions, Inc. This has not been easy by any stretch. There are a lot of direct and indirect competition in the children’s educational space. We have been able to overcome these challenges by creating a fun and engaging alternative method to teaching children. Our success has been based on customer feedback. Kids actually enjoy using our products while they learn.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love what California has to offer: I would start out day 1 with a round of golf at our country club, then we would head North to LA and hit up some cultural museums, Pinks for lunch then followed by a Dodger Game. Day two, the exploration of what LA has to offer would begin…. Hitting up local/cultural Restaurants and shops… Then maybe head up the coast to the Monterey Peninsula for some more golf and surf for a few days. After that, head across to the Sierras for some fishing and hiking. After a long road trip, we’d cap it off with some good old So Cal beach time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to send my wife Marlis, a Shoutout. She has been my biggest supporter for our venture. Marlis is also an entrepreneur, so we lean on each other for support. She is the owner of The White Dress in Corona Del Mar, CA as well as Galia Lahav in Los Angeles and Miami.
