We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandria Cheng and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandria, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks is uncomfortable, we are creatures of habit and change removes us out of our comfort zone. When it comes to taking a risk, I try to understand the situation from all perspectives by questioning everything and everyone. Personally, I tend to be more calculated and prefer to play things on the safe side. However, I know how crucial it is to disrupt patterns and to make those bold leaps in the beginning of any endeavor in order to create something different.

I was lucky enough to find a partner that compliments my grounded nature with vivaciousness and passion for growth. As truly complete opposites, we took the big risk and bet on ourselves. After years of working on making other people’s companies grow, this was our first time ever being completely responsible for every aspect of a business. Through open communication and a lot of conscious effort, we learned how to trust in each other’s intuition to make the big decisions. Also, even though we plan ten steps ahead, we also anticipate failures and setbacks, then learn how to grow from them. Regardless of starting a solo or partnered venture, having a support system of people that resonate with you and your cause is essential to building a strong foundation.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from other entrepreneurs is the fact that I do a little bit of everything. As a multidisciplinary digital designer, I’ve found a passion for executing revolutionary ideas into practical applications.  After spearheading the brand development for a boutique health & wellness company, I gained experience in the fast-paced startup environment and developed a successful track record in strategic operations, marketing, and business development. This experience launched me to consult with numerous brands across the healthcare space before launching my own brand, Shen Generation. Although things have transitioned well into each other, the emotional taxation often felt defeating. My lesson and tips for others, no matter what industry you’re in, trust in the timing of everything and learn from each and every experience, good and bad.

The name of my company, Shen Generation, roots from a vision for all human beings to value sustainability and balance within their body, mind, and spirit or “shen”. By combining fundamental scientific research and traditional eastern medicine, we’ve developed a system of personalized care that encourages your body’s self-healing capabilities. Our work has been noticed by all types of clientele, from the world’s top elite, grandparents and children, to professional athletes. No matter what generation you come from, we want and deserve to feel our best.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question because food is my love language. I believe food connects everyone, so bring your stretchy pants! Starting on the west side, take the scenic drive to Inn of the Seventh Ray, trust me you won’t regret it – the fairy tale scenery and jaw-dropping quality food will transport anyone out of this world. For more local west side experiences head to Erehwon for a large selection of healthy delicious eats and go eat it on the beach, Cha Cha Chicken for fun & eclectic Caribbean food & dining, and of course Lodge Bread Co. for fantastic fresh-baked bread, sandwiches and pizza (my go to is the breakfast sando but ask for it on one of their famously moist and flakey croissants). For a unique gem, check out Crawfish Mitch (@cajuncoastcommodities) in Mar Vista – a guy I met while walking around my neighborhood who does authentic Louisiana crawfish boils in his backyard! Heading eastward, I still love my family’s former restaurant Formosa Cafe for an old-school Hollywood historic vibe. Bop over to K-Town for Korean BBQ, grab a beer and snacks at Arts District Brewery or go bowling at Highland Park Bowl for night entertainment and drinks. Venturing even further east, grab some authentic Dim Sum in the San Gabriel Valley (my favorite is Lunasia Dim Sum House) or slurp some soul-warming pho at Golden Deli. A few other favorite misc. places to explore and things to do: take in the views of LA from Los Liones trail or Mulholland Dr., catch a comedy show in Hollywood, and look up Sofar Sounds for an intimate concert!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am today without the endless support and motivation of so many individuals who have uplifted me throughout the years. Family that show me their ways of wisdom, friends who motivate and push me to where I need to be, and strangers’ innate human kindness that inspire me to be in the field I am today. I am so blessed to have parents who boundlessly support my ideas and dreams. I come from a family of Asian-American artists that grew up in the 70/80s – so they really set the bar on how to live life freely, effectively and in flow with the world. When I met my partner and co-founder of Shen Generation, Brian – I learned a new level of accelerated drive and innovation. Together, with plenty of trial and error, we’ve created something truly special on our shared mission to help people feel happier and healthier.
