We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Vanessa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis Vanessa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve struggled with anxiety, depression, insomnia, and procrastination. For a while I didn’t have access to therapy but still needed tools and resources. So I created an avenue and resources for those who just need a bridge to get them from where they are mentally to where they want to be. I put my heart into creating pieces that discuss mental health because it’s necessary. Whether it be my mental fitness planner, toolkits or my poetry book. I know what it’s like to feel off balanced and feel like you’re drowning in plain sight.
When I created my business my intentions were to 1. Create an avenue for other morenitas like me and 2. Help create more conversations around the importance of self care and self awareness.
My wish for anyone who I interact with is to Prioritize YOU. Do little things that make you happy, make you feel more confident in yourself, make you feel inspired. Do things that make you want to wake up in the morning.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
SunshineTee Co. grew out of me wanting to see myself for all that I was versus all that I wasn’t. I understand how hard it can be to try to balance everything while struggling with panic attacks, depression, and anxiety. I understand how difficult it is to need therapy but not have the financial means to pay for therapy. I designed the Prioritize YOU collection because I wanted to create accessible tools to help improve mental well-being. I create art that is about radically deciding to love yourself and in turn everything that surrounds you. Radical love and liberation through creation. Art has saved my life. I’ve been able to heal myself through my poetry and my art. To be able to share my journey with others is a blessing because of how far I’ve come. Everything I create is with the intention to remind my beautiful sunflowers of their worthiness, their unique, necessary perspective and their divine beauty.
Deciding to start my business during a pandemic was the wildest idea I’ve had thus far; but the most amazing one. If you want something go for it, and keep going for it. Whatever your dream is, protect it. Consistency is everything. And always always remember to be gentle with yourself.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best franns in town, Day 1 I’m taking her to Portos bakery in Glendale because EVERYTHING IS BETTER WITH PORTOS! Then, We’re taking our pastelitos and cheese rolls to the Griffith Observatory for a romanticle date. There we’ll look at the stars and talk about how much we missed each other. Day 2 -4 we’re heading to Temecula because wine country +hotgirlsummer is a match made in heaven. My favorite winery in Temecula is Callaway. We’ll start there and wrap our nights in downtown Temecula. Day 5 we’ll hit Yogurtland because we’ll need sugary fuel for the museums. We’ll start at the Broad Museum, grab food at Sage Restaurant then end with the LACMA. Day 6 we’ll hit the Glendale Galleria for swimsuits, endless window shopping and Dippin-Dots. Then we’ll check out Boat Cinema because we love a good romanticle date. Day 7 is for a self care beach day.
I love going places where I can talk, have a great experience and enjoy good company.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout my OG supporter my mama, Xiomara. She understands that I’m a free spirit and an artist. From the very first day I started my business my mom has invested, helped me sell, and encouraged me. I definitely wouldn’t be the loving, reflective, sunflower that I am without her!
