We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Lesse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I love taking risks! Calculated, well-thought out and planned risks. I’m a capricorn and by that, I mean…I love to take risks and growth. I’ve always felt that when you get too comfortable and complacent, it makes it difficult to make that next move that could better many different aspects of our lives. I’ve most certainly always been very career driven, so when I fell in love with my husband and decided to move to LA 6 years ago, I decided the career risk was one worth taking. The opportunities in Los Angeles seemed endless for hairstylists and the joy and excitement that surrounded my decision to take a leap of faith was honestly, so overwhelming! I look back on that time in my life and how scared and excited I was and i’m so happy that I had that fearless fire beneath me. I have so much to be grateful for now!
What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve been doing hair for 16+ years and in the last 6 years i’ve definitely worked the hardest! I work out of a private studio in Beverly Hills at the moment, but have some exciting things in the works for the near future! Before this, I assisted at Koji Toyoda salon in West Hollywood when I first moved out here and I learned so much! I then moved to being a booth rental stylist at The Compound Salon in Culver City and really built my clientele there. I don’t think any stylist will tell you that it was easy to get to where they are. Success typically doesn’t come “easy” but the hard-work, assisting, education, networking, long hours, all of it…is so worth it in the end! I wouldn’t change it for the world. It’s fueled my fire and passion for this industry! I’ve learned so many lessons from those around me as well as my experiences. I’ve learned so much about the art of hair, business, and BALANCE and it’s all so incredibly valuable.
I have an amazing clientele full of like-minded clients who care about clean beauty and sustainability. I decided in the last year to make the switch to clean products COMPLETELY and I couldn’t be happier! I feel better and i’m sure my clients do too. And to top it off…their hair feels amazing! I saw a need in the market for clean beauty in this space and I took a leap for it. I’m so happy I did! I use Oway and O&M hair color and my clients and I couldn’t be happier! My passion for clean beauty and environmentally-friendly products doesn’t stop at the salon door either. I use Beauty Counter products at home and Blueland cleaning products and I love knowing that even my little changes are hopefully making a difference in the world!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Malibu first and foremost! I love a nice drive up the PCH to chill on a quiet beach, with a ceasar salad topped with lobster and french fries from Broadstreet Oyster Company. You also have to stop at Joules and Watts coffee next door while you are waiting and get yourself the most delicious coffee or ice cream from Max! I love doing all of the hikes up in Malibu but I think my favorite would be Paseo Miramar in the Palisades. I would then take them to Abbott Kinney to walk around and probably go to The Butcher’s daughter for dinner. A few other favorites for visits are Hotel Erwin in Venice for their rooftop views. There are so many places, I really can’t even list them. But there would definitely be a trip to Ginger’s Ice Cream in Culver! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people deserve shoutouts. Literally everyone who has been a part of my life, has helped me pave this road. One friend and fellow boss babe that comes to mind, is my friend Mazz Hanna. She owns Mazz Hanna (a CBD & crystal infused skincare company) and Nailing Hollywood. She’s an incredibly talented and hardworking woman and is most certainly one of my biggest cheerleaders and I feel so blessed to have her bright energy, encouragement and guidance in my life!
