We had the good fortune of connecting with Charmaine Platon, RN and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charmaine, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
2 years ago, I was scrolling on Instagram when I saw a post that changed EVERYTHING for me.
This post was a picture of someone who had just gotten off work as was holding a “Unicorn Frapp” from Starbucks.
In the post caption, this person put the hashtag #selfcare.
After I saw that post, it dawned on me…
Many people think that eating sugar and carbs is a form of self-care.
Because these kind of foods (high in sugar and carbs) give us an unnaturally high dopamine hit, many people mistake the feeling of “pleasure” with “comfort.”
They think that “pleasure” is equivalent to self-care.
I’m determined to debunk that myth.
As a Sugar Cravings Coach, Certified Keto Health Coach, and Registered Nurse, I see WAY too many women falling for the idea that sugar and carbs are a way to “treat ourselves.”
But more often that not, the clients I coach spiral into a cycle of shame, frustration, and disappointment almost always after they eat these foods unintentionally.
I’m here to end that shame cycle, and help women lose weight in a way that feels empowering and effortless.
That is why I created “Sugar-Free Self-Care” — my online life and weight loss coaching practice that has helped women all over the nation stop acting on their impulses to eat sugar and carbs so they lose weight permanently.
What should our readers know about your business?
Time and time again, I see this all over Instagram, Facebook, and social media. Many people believe that the way to lose weight is either: eating a “clean” diet, exercising more, and limiting calories.
The truth is, EVEN if someone follows those guidelines perfectly… if that person does not know how to stop acting on their IMPULSES to overeat, they will not be able to lose weight permanently.
That is exactly what I saw in my weight loss coaching practice when I first started taking on free clients toward the end of 2018. I realized that ALL my clients had one thing in common:
None of them knew how to stop reacting to their spontaneous urges to eat sugar and carbs.
I saw this especially during holiday times and during stressful events in one’s life.
I knew that, as a Weight Loss Coach and Keto Health Coach, permanent weight loss is about more than just telling someone how to eat.
That person must know and master the SKILL of not acting on their IMPULSES to eat.
That skill alone is what I have mastered myself, and what I coach my clients with.
It took me 3 years to master this skill for myself, but after loads of trial and error, I’ve condensed this skill into a 4-Step framework called the Impulse Mastery Method.
With this framework, I make it easy and accessible for ANYONE to stop impulsively eating.
It’s my mission to help people also see that self-care is NOT dependent on the substances we consume.
This is a common misperception we’ve grown to believe, based on all the lessons we’ve learned from: social media, marketing, advertisements, cultural beliefs, and societal beliefs.
The truth is, many people make money off of the idea that consumerism is what creates happiness.
I’ll be the first person to reassure you that it’s NOT.
And we know this is true because SO many wealthy people are still depressed, anxious, and unhappy with their lives.
A big part of my business is also helping my clients see that true well-being comes from within, and comes from managing our mental health in a way where we follow through on our goals and commitments to ourselves.
I started my business 2 years ago while working per diem as a Registered Nurse at UCLA. I quit my nursing job last year (during the height of COVID!) to pursue my dream of running my business full-time.
Now, I LOVE what I do and I love the movement I’m leading to help people see that true self-care is not dependent on the food we eat.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love living in Irvine! Mostly because Irvine has PERFECT weather (seriously… NOT kidding here). Also, it’s a great place for people who love the outdoors, like myself! Some of my favorite places here are:
Woodbridge Community Park – Gorgeous park with plenty of walking space, a lake, and an overall peaceful and relaxing walking path. (Side note — this is also where my fiance proposed to me! I love this park!)
San Joaquin Wildlife Reserve – This wildlife reserve has a ton of trails and is also a very well-paved walking path. There’s plenty of space for runners, bikers, and for families! It’s never heavily crowded and is a great place to start off the weekend.
Yuk Dae Jang – If you LOVE Korean food, Yuk Dae Jang offers high quality Korean food with some of the best pork belly I’ve ever had. Their tofu soup is a generous serving and their meals are very big in portions and made for sharing!
Ribbro BBQ – I’m a huge BBQ fan, and I used to always go to LA for great barbecue. Now, I’m thankful I can go to Ribbro BBQ for a fantastic slice of brisket when I’m in the mood for some great meat! This BBQ joint is also unique because it offers Korean condiments and sauces as well.
Wholesome Choice – I just have to say… I love this grocery store. I never thought I would love a grocery store so much LOL. But this place not only offers amazing prices for their meat and produce, but they also have an incredible food court with an awesome variety of food. My favorite go-to there is their Indian food… Their Chicken Tandoori and Samosas are a must-try! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to all the amazing women I’ve had the privilege of working with over the past couple years! All of my clients inspire me — from their willingness to show up, be vulnerable, and do the mindset work that is required to make permanent changes to their eating habits. I’m so grateful for the privilege to be your coach, and for everything you’ve taught me about myself along the way! You are all AMAZING.
