We had the good fortune of connecting with Ami Gosalia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ami, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
One of our favorite cartoons at Mondays has the caption: “I can’t remember: do I work at home or do I live at work?”. In the drawing, you can’t tell if the person is at a home office or their work office. And that’s kind of the point. Corporations of all shapes and sizes have led many of us to approach work as our #1 priority. The rest of your life fits in when possible, if at all. At Mondays, we reject that completely. For us, the template for balance starts with you and the life you want. We encourage supportive workplace environments, positive mental health, self-care and nourishing relationships as the starting point for work-life balance, or what we prefer to call work-life integration. Building from that foundation of professional wellness, we want everyone to have a healthy relationship with their daily work. We firmly believe that this is the key to optimizing your professional performance. I personally learned through a diverse career and several startups to aim to have work fit into my life, rather than attempting to fit my life into my work. It’s a win-win for companies and people, and it genuinely has led me to many Happy Mondays!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Mondays brand is inspired by the late-90’s cult classic Office Space, where the main character was diagnosed by his boss with a “case of the Mondays”. The truth is that the vast majority of the 150,000,000 American workers who work out of desks, vehicles, assembly lines and checkout counters know that feeling very well. Our company and our brand is about taking a different approach to our work. We hope to turn “the Mondays” into something we enjoy rather than something we dread. I started Mondays (www.Mondays.com) in 2020 to create positive change at the intersection of personal wellness and professional performance. We are an evidence-based innovation studio that builds and curates high-impact solutions for the modern professional. Our brand new Mondays Marketplace curates high-quality products for traditional and home office environments focused on your MIND, BODY, BRAIN and SPACE. Whether it’s your at-home work environment (#WFH) or your office, car or classroom — our mission is to help you have a healthier and happier relationship with work. We want to turn your office space into your Happy Place! The journey to get where we are today has been interesting to say the least. Our first book, Mondays Moves, was published when I was 7 months pregnant. And a month after my son was born, the pandemic hit. Things happen! While Covid-19 wasn’t what we planned for, it’s led individuals and companies to bring the topic of workplace mental health and physical health to the forefront — particularly for essential workers. For newly remote workers, many professionals now have an opportunity to cultivate a different model for work-life design that allows for life to play the leading role. Mondays is proud to be an active supporter of this shift towards a truly healthy relationship with our work. While we’re just getting started, I’ve learned how important it is to surround yourself with people you can learn from, put the problem you’re trying to solve (and the people you’re trying to solve it for) at the center of every business decision, and to use setbacks to fuel you and help you grow.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles has a tremendous art scene, with dozens of smaller galleries open for learning about and supporting local emerging artists. The best part about exploring these galleries is they’re located all around the city, giving you a glimpse into neighborhoods you might not otherwise visit — including Inglewood, Culver City and DTLA. We are also spoiled with “open-air tourism”, with endless opportunities to spend all day outside hiking at places like Will Rogers State Park and El Matador State Beach (two of my favorites!). One of my ideal ways to spend a weekend morning is by starting with breakfast at Gjusta, followed by a stroll through the walk streets and canals in Venice. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m inspired on a daily basis by our amazing team at Mondays (including Lina Cordero and Pekhna Mahajan), and of course by my loving family who always keeps me laughing and smiling even when I’m having one of those days.
