We had the good fortune of connecting with André Carmo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi André, how do you define success?
I think success is a very personal metric. I believe only someone can determine if they are successful or not because it truly depends on what they value! For me, being such a goal-driven person, overcoming challenges brings me happiness. Thus believing that for me to be successful, I need to push myself and overcome those challenges.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started sailing when I was 7 years old. Fast forward 15 years and hours of filmmaking and photography tutorials on YouTube, and here I am! Travelling the world doing what I love!
Ever since I was a kid that my goal has been to do a Volvo Ocean Race! A round the world sailing race!
I have sailed across the Atlantic 2 times, alongside starting 2 video production companies, working for the biggest sailing YouTube Channel, taking a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and pursuing my dream of sailing cinematography.
This year I am working with a team, getting everything ready for the 2022 race edition!
It has definitely not been an easy ride so far, but what I’ve learned is that unless you put yourself out there, nothing will happen. And even if you failed at something, at least you tried! And that’s essential if you want to reach your goals.
Also, with the amount of information and resources online, you can learn so many new skills. It’s something that I’ve done and truly recommend to everyone.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely go check the major film studios! The Paramount studios, Columbia/Sony, 20th Century FOX, Universal and Warner Bros! For food I would definitely get some ribs at Gus’s Barbecue in South Pasadena! Everyday 🙌🏼
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to mention Jen Edney when it comes to mentorship. I had set myself to do a Volvo Ocean Race and asked Jen if she would mentor me on this big journey! I also want to give a huge thank you to Riley and Elayna, from La Vagabonde, for all of our work together onboard. I also want to thank my girlfriend and family for all of their support!
