We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Chernin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrea, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my company is working with educators who truly understand students with learning differences from various angles, including their learning profiles, their social/emotional needs, and their strengths/stretches. We all realize the importance of fit and chemistry in the one-to-one working relationship with our students, and when we are able to step back and consider the whole child, magic happens.

What should our readers know about your business?
As highly-trained Educational Therapists, Learning Specialists, and Executive Functioning Coaches, we focus on the whole child and target areas of need within a student’s learning profile using intensive, one-on-one interventions. We work on building up students’ strengths to combat their weaknesses and scaffold them toward confidence and success both in and out of the classroom. After conducting informal assessments and reading neuropsychological assessments (if provided), we personalize sessions for each student with specific, measurable psycho-educational goals. We aim to establish rapport with the child which will help him or her feel secure when exposing academic areas that have historically been challenging. We also teach executive functioning skills, compensatory strategies, and self-advocacy, as our ultimate mission is to make ourselves obsolete while students become independent learners. The studentship and life hacks that they learn under our guidance, and explicit, concentrated instruction will be carried with them for the rest of their schooling careers and lives. With our wide breadth of knowledge and experience, we know that students with learning differences can make wonderful gains with the right mix of warmth, positivity, and encouragement.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a best friend was coming to Los Angeles for the week, I would definitely take her to my favorite places in our beautiful city. These would include stopping in Malibu to check out the beach, having lunch at Nobu, then heading to the Malibu Country Mart for a walk around the boutiques. We would also try to make it to Century City for a stroll at the outdoor mall, to Rodeo Drive/Brighton Way for some people watching. I would take her for dinner at Barton G’s for a fun, whimsical experience and then to the Waldorf roof top bar for drinks and some gorgeous views. Other stops would include going to Santa Monica for some fresh, hot Sidecar Donuts and to roam around the Third Street Promenade, going to Olvera Street, and Downtown LA’s Koreatown for karaoke and a fun dessert. On a weekend outing, we would drive down to Santa Barbara or Palm Springs for some rest and relaxation, or to the Ojai Valley Inn to hang at their stunning spa.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my story to my incredible team at Illuminate Educational Therapy Group. I truly value their intensive work, and love collaborating with them in best support of our wonderful students.
