We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Joy Tucker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea Joy, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Persistence! This industry is not for the faint of heart, and in many ways our career depends on the risks and chances that we take. It can always be scary starting something new or a new position, but like with anything the more time you spend doing something the better you’ll become.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I got my introduction into the industry with my internship at ESPN headquarters in 2013. I’ve been doing sports gigs sporadically since then, but I’ve been working in the entertainment industry doing music videos, TV/Film, etc. since 2017 when I first moved to LA. It hasn’t been easy; there have been jobs I’ve worked for free in the industry to get my feet wet, while juggling work I deemed irrelevant in order to pay bills. Also, there would be months that would go by where I wouldn’t get work in my field, and as discouraging as that was I realized how common it is in our industry. In hindsight, it all prepared me for my current position. Recently, I became an Associate Producer, so there’s plenty that I’m learning-but it’s great to be on the track I want to take as a Producer! It gives me hope that I can reach certain goals and other milestones in my career sooner than I think.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many scenic areas in LA! I’d take them by Santa Monica Pier first, since there’s plenty to eat nearby, the beach, and shopping! Speaking of shopping, probably my favorite place to shop, eat, and hang out at is The Grove! I also love DTLA and LA Live! The Staples Center, Grammy Museum, and I wish I could count how many lunch dates I’ve had at Yard House! Then, we can go by the shops at Rodeo Drive which are high end so I’ll shop there when I’m making A LOT more money, but the area in general is also very nice to take pictures! On the other hand, we MUST go hiking! There’s Culver City Stairs which aren’t all that bad, and also the hike to the Hollywood sign. Lastly, Hollywood and Highland has so many interesting people and characters, along with so much history-so we have to end the trip there!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My tribe! Family, friends, church, and anyone who’s been encouraging and/or given me a chance to prove myself!
