We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelene Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angelene, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting your own business often comes with the romantic notion of being your own boss, where everything seems simple and stress-free. But the reality is quite the opposite—every client, partner, and even your own expectations become your boss. The journey behind MYA Hotel Boutique and OLIVEA Farm to Table wasn’t our first venture, but it was originally envisioned as our family’s peaceful retirement project—a small, enjoyable space where we could focus on quality, creativity, and sustainability. However, life had other plans, and this project quickly grew into something much more ambitious. While it has brought its share of challenges, it’s also been one of the most fulfilling adventures we’ve embarked on, allowing us to share our passion for hospitality and farm-to-table dining with a wider audience. The learning and growth we’ve experienced have made it a journey we wouldn’t trade for anything.

What should our readers know about your business?
Our business revolves around hospitality, with MYA Hotel Boutique on one side and OLIVEA Farm to Table on the other. What sets us apart is our desire to create an experience that reflects how we, as clients, like to be treated—with warmth, care, and a personal touch. Unlike many others in the industry who start with a professional background in hospitality or as part of a larger group, we are simply a family doing the best we can, driven by passion and persistence.

Getting to where we are today has been a journey full of challenges. It wasn’t easy, but we never allowed ourselves to stop moving forward. Each obstacle became just another step in the process, and we’ve learned to tackle whatever comes our way with resilience. One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that persistence is key. You have to love what you do because, without that love, the challenges can turn into frustration. But when you’re passionate about your work, those same challenges become opportunities to grow, to learn, and to improve.

It’s easy to say, ‘nothing is easy,’ but living through it makes you truly understand the depth of that phrase. There are days when you have to remind yourself to just keep going, one step at a time. The secret is to approach difficult situations with a mindset that they can be solved—even if they’re not easy. When you keep pushing through, you find that eventually, things do get fixed, and then you’re ready for the next challenge.

What I want the world to know about our story and brand is that it’s built on family. This business is truly our home—literally. We live here, and we welcome guests as if they’re stepping into our home. When you stay at MYA or dine at OLIVEA, you’re not just a customer; you’re part of our family. That sense of belonging is what we hope every guest feels when they walk through our doors. It’s personal for us, and we believe that’s what makes our place special.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, the first stop would, of course, be MYA. I’d want them to experience the same warmth and comfort we offer to all our guests, just like welcoming family. After enjoying a meal at OLIVEA Farm to Table, we’d explore some of the incredible spots in Valle de Guadalupe.

I’d start by taking them to Las Nubes Wine, which offers breathtaking views and has recently upgraded its facilities. Next, we’d visit La Carrodilla, where the focus on sustainability and water conservation, as well as their beautiful gardens, makes for a unique experience. Another favorite of mine is Vinisterra, where every wine is crafted with such authenticity and care—it’s truly some of the best you’ll taste. For a more intimate experience, Mina Penelope is perfect. You get to enjoy a wine tasting directly from the winemaker under the shade of a large oak tree, surrounded by the vineyard where all the grapes are grown. It’s a special, estate-only experience.

No trip would be complete without enjoying some freshly made bread at Aveolo—there’s nothing like it! For a quick bite, Adobe Food Truck is the place to go. The Spanish inspired tapas are made to order, and you get to sit, eat and relax inside the garden’s of Adobe Guadalupe.

There are so many incredible places to eat and enjoy wine in Valle de Guadalupe that a week would barely be enough to experience them all!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely! There’s one person who deserves a lot of credit, and that’s my husband, Miguel Diaz. He’s been an integral part of everything we’ve built. In fact, the name ‘MYA’ reflects our partnership: M for Miguel, Y is the Spanish ‘y’ for ‘and,’ and A stands for Ange, short for Angelene. Together, we’ve worked on various projects for years, primarily in design and construction. I come up with the designs, but it’s Miguel who brings them to life with his skill and expertise. Without his dedication, none of this would exist the way it does today. We’ve truly built everything side by side, and his support has been invaluable in making MYA what it is.
