We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Sayo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anthony, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?

Taking bold steps amidst uncertainties. Uncertainties are ever-present in every great undertaking. But to move forward, you gotta take bold steps to move closer to where you want to be. I am a true artist, and I would say that in many life-changing decisions in my life that I had to take, I let my heart rule over my head. The mind can simply perceive too many problems, even those that do not necessarily exist. Taking bold steps is the only way to move forward.

Another habit or skill that I think is important is the ability to filter out noise and unnecessary clutter in your life, and not allow negative energy to tamper with your peace and focus. Haters, doubters, naysayers will always be a part of life, and for me – negative opinions and unnecessary judgment from people who don’t support your goals are just clutter. Keep shining and don’t let the non-believers dim your light.

Another secret to success that I have realized is – in order to fast track your growth and development, surround yourself with people with the same drive and passion to succeed as you do. If negative energy is contagious, so is positive energy. Discipline, focus, killer work ethic – these positive traits are also so contagious, and its easy to “catch” these powerful traits if you surround yourself with driven and successful people.

Please tell us more about you. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I was born and raised in the Philippines, so as a “foreign implant” to this beautiful and ethnically diverse creative community of Los Angeles, I know that I have a unique cultural upbringing and personality, and consequentially a unique artistic expression. As an actor, I am excited to give my take on any character that I play on screen. I believe that all good art stems from the heart of an artist, and my portrayal of any character is deeply rooted in my own unique humanity. The art of filmmaking is very collaborative, it is ultimately a fusion of so many artistic inputs from different creative professionals – directors, cinematographers, set and costume designers, etc. I am confident that I can add a different and authentic flavor to this fusion, that will contribute to the overall quality and meaning of the final product.

From the Philippines, I have to take bold steps to leave everything behind and pursue an acting career in another country. It is never easy, and it never was. But I am passionate about what I do, I love the process, I love the journey. Wherever my spirit is fulfilled, that is where I call home.

I have learned many things so far in this journey, and if there is one thing I can share for now – it is that you will know you are in the right place, that you are in the industry you are meant to be if you are enjoying your journey. The journey is not a straight uphill path, it has its highs and lows, but the hardships and challenges are all worth it if you feel that your soul is fulfilled.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Universal Studios to have fun with the raptors. I have heard that raptors now run around the park. I’m also a big fan of musical experiences, concerts, – so if there is a nice show at the Hollywood Bowl, I’d greatly recommend it. And of course, if I have a friend visiting LA, I’ll take him for a stroll down the Hollywood Boulevard, on the Walk of Fame, for that authentic, one of a kind Hollywood experience.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m giving a shoutout to the Harold Twins @joelharold and @josephbharold. They own a great self-taping facility for actors called Dr. Self Tape located in West Hollywood. I do a lot of my audition tapes at their studio. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their help, friendship and support. They are also creators, visionaries, and overall great human beings. Check out their studio at @dr.selftape
