We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Reed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I definitely view risk as the gatekeeper of opportunity. When I think about all of the risks I’ve ever taken, big or small, I think about how it was almost always a game-changing opportunity on the other side of it. You have to ask yourself “Will I be able to forgive myself for not taking this risk in the years to come?” “Will I always think what could’ve been if I didn’t do this?” If your answer includes even a hint of YES it’s not worth it. It’s not worth playing it safe. You live one life. Seriously, let that sink in. ONE. Not doing something because you’re waiting for enough time, enough money, enough knowledge is reckless because the perfect conditions do not exist. Take the risk and make do with what you’ve got right NOW at this very moment. The rest will come. Being a risk-taker has completely changed my life. It’s how I got to LA, it’s how I started my own business, it’s how I’ve received the career opportunities I have, and how I’ve made some damn good memories on the way. The life I am currently living is a product of risks and I’m so proud of that.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own an online interior services studio by the name of Reed & Room Co. (reedandroomco.com). We virtually decorate for clients looking to upgrade rooms in their home and provide them with interior direction, suggestions, and the tools they need to achieve their interior goals! My signature service is my D2GO with R&R Co. packet also known as the decorating to-go packet. Think interior decorator meets personal shopper, but virtually! I believe what sets Reed & Room Co. apart from others is unlike traditional interior services that charge hourly, our services are a flat rate per room to keep cost consistent and practical for the client. Also, our process is completely virtual and therefore super efficient. The process is truly something I’m proud of. We’ve made a luxury service, like interior decorating, accessible to more people than ever by doing the things I’ve just mentioned. The days of an interior designer physically coming into your home are fewer and less especially since the pandemic. Not to mention, everyone can’t invest 10+k into making their house a home. That shouldn’t mean they deserve to love their space any less. We believe everyone deserves to fully live in themselves. Which is how our tagline became live in you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I first would take my best friend to my favorite sunset spots around the city. I’m a sucker for a good sunset and so is she. One of my favorite sunset spots is in Malibu at a lookout right off PCH. It’s totally random, but the view during sunset is mesmerizing. I’ve never seen anything like it. The week would definitely include multiple beach trips to Marina Del Rey, hikes up Runyon, dinner at my favorite seafood spot in Koreatown (EMC Seafood and Raw Bar), and lots of good wine at my favorite rooftop in DTLA, Perch. LA has so much to see that a week would simply not be enough. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents and family deserve the utmost recognition for where I am today. They have always been unconditionally supportive and accepting of my journey no matter how insane it might’ve seemed. They ALWAYS let me be myself and encouraged self-expression. Any chance they had they told me I could do anything. Especially my parents! I know a lot of parents speak the words “you can do anything you put your mind to”, but mine actually meant it. Their actions proved it to be 100% of the time. My mom and dad are my best friends. I couldn’t have gotten where I am today without their support, guidance, and advice. I could not be more proud of where I’m from, how I was raised, and who I’ve become. I selflessly and willingly give all the credit to them.
