We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashling Loh-Doyle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashling, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
When it comes to the success of Lotus and Ash, I believe two things have contributed to it: 1. Time Management, and 2. Going the extra mile for our clients. No matter what business you’re starting, it’s critical to have good time management. Time management isn’t just about setting a schedule for the day (though, that’s a large part of it), but it’s also about being realistic about timelines with clients, and being able to understand the value of your time. For example, every day, I break up my day into hour-long blocks. Some blocks are used for meetings, some blocks are used for creative work. Other blocks are used for eating or working out or caring for our newborn. Mapping out my days in this way allows me to understand how long it will take me to accomplish something, and helps me to stay on task throughout the day. Ultimately, understanding the value of our time has led us to develop fair pricing, and sustain a thriving business built on my passion for design and printing. Our little company would be nowhere without the highest quality customer service. Since I first started Lotus & Ash, it’s been a priority to make sure that our customers always felt supported by us — no matter how big or small their project. We pride ourselves on our responsiveness, our empathy, and having a “solution oriented” mindset to any challenges that are presented. Sometimes, they ask the seemingly impossible — “can we have 50 custom gifts designed, fulfilled, and delivered in 3 days” — but we always seek a solution that allows us to do high quality work and achieves the outcomes they’re seeking.
What should our readers know about your business?
Lotus & Ash is a creative studio and stationery press in Los Angeles. We work with creatives, founders, and couples around the world to build compelling visual identities, and produce one-of-a-kind paper goods and decor for weddings and events. There’s not a day that goes by that we aren’t grateful to our clients for allowing us to help them build the visual brands for their businesses, or invite us to be a part of their wedding weekend. We are fueled by their passion and love. We’ve been in business for 10 years, and it’s been incredible to see the business grow from a tiny side hustle to a full blown design agency with employees. We moved HQ from San Francisco to Los Angeles. We learned how to grow from a business of one to a business with multiple full-time employees. The greatest challenge yet has been weathering the COVID pandemic. It has been an insane challenge to our business, which is built on events and large gatherings. But, we were able to pivot and double down on our brand identity work and have been able to survive through 2020. At the end of the day, we’ve realized that there is so much need for good design in the world — whether it’s to create a cohesive design for a wedding weekend, or a compelling brand identity. Our goal is to meet this need no matter what the global climate.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out Sugar Paper and Jessica Hische for inspiring my love of paper and graphic design respectively!
