We had the good fortune of connecting with Beatriz Perez Soto and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beatriz, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am originally from Guanajuato, Mexico, but was raised in Southern California in the city of La Puente – about 25 minutes east of Los Angeles. I grew up in a hardworking predominantly Latino community- failure was never an option in my household. While growing up, my parents worked opposite schedules so one of them would always be home with my sister and I, my dad worked nights and mom worked early morning shifts. Which that left my dad to take my younger sister and I to school, he dressed us, did our hair- crooked hair parts and all but he did our hair.
One thing I will never forget were my dad’s anecdotes, stories of him when he was growing up, and his life advice he would give us on those early morning car rides to school.
One thing that he always shared with us was something his dad would always tell him, which was “The foundation to success in this life is education”. I took that to heart, even at an early age. As years passed, I always knew I would be going to a high education institution, I ended up going to Cal Poly Pomona and majoring in Landscape Architecture with a minor in Regenerative Studies.
It was those early morning talks with my dad that have definitely shaped who I am today as an individual, knowing that no matter what I did major in school, my parents instilled a sense of determination, tenacity and a will to never just settle for what is handed but to go the extra mile to achieve my goals.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Betty’s Bites was created during a time when I was feeling like I needed to do something different, something to be able to call my own, and during a time when many things were uncertain for me in my life- also it did not help that all this was happening during a time when the entire world was also going through a pandemic! The pandemic made things 10 times harder, because a lot of people were afraid and any sort of social activity was almost non-existent, which made it extremely counterintuitive for my business model.
I soon realized that I had created a business model around being social, and gathering with friends to celebrate around a beautiful and delicious tray of meats and cheeses.
But that’s where the idea of the boxes came from, I knew people would still gather in small groups while keeping socially distanced, but they could still not share a large tray amongst them, so I came up with the idea of curating personal charcuterie boxes for them.
Perhaps the most important lesson I did learn was to not limit yourself nor your business model by set standards, and that in order to have a successful business we have to bend and evolve with all the external curveballs we might be thrown.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents, they are my rock, my role models and what I aspire to be- hardworking, honest, tenacious and family oriented. Even now as an adult, everything I do is for them and to see them happy, because they were the ones who planted the seeds that have helped me accomplish all that I have in life.
Also, I would like to thank a small group of ladies, (you know who are), who have supported my goal of owning this Charcuterie Business from the very beginning.
Lastly, the most important people who I have to thank and owe everything to, are my clients. My clients are all amazing people who it is because of them that Betty’s Bites has been so successful!
