We had the good fortune of connecting with Blake Coppelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Blake, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Dedication, patience, and persistence. I strongly believe that these three qualities are integral of any person to have whether they start their own business or at a business with upward mobility. Staying dedicated and true to your vision if you genuinely believe in it is the first step. Being patient as your growth never happens overnight. And lastly, staying persistence in terms of actively thinking and working on all aspects of your business to make it grow and succeed.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets us apart is the reason why we started each section of our business. For the past 10 years we have been and still are working with major labels. We are integrated in to their marketing campaigns. I have seen pretty much every single major label deal and many are incredibly one sided in the label’s favor to the point that artists are still years in to their deals and can not exit.
I wanted to start the Proximity record label with regard to what I learned throughout these years of working with the majors. We wanted artists to WANT to sign to us and with that, have never bound them against their will with multi-year long contracts. We work on loyalty and performance – by delivering actual results. Over the course of the past 4 years, our artists have left major record labels or declined 6-7 figure advances just to stay with us, because we have consistently produced successful campaigns for them. I am incredibly proud to be doing this and rivaling major record labels, giving fairer deals and paying out artists what they deserve.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Because I live in Ventura County my itinerary would be a little different. For me I would say to drive up to Santa Barbara and Solvang, which is a cute Danish village 30 minutes away from SB. It offers something incredibly unique and different than your typical LA rooftop bar. It’s more home-y here – there are beautiful wineries and farm to table restaurants.
A few places to particularly note are:
Sear Steakhouse in Solvang – family owned and most of the produce/meat comes from their own family farm when available.
Dovecote – Vineyard out in Solvang that feels like you’re Noah’s house from The Notebook. Some of the most delicious wine I’ve ever had and the setting makes it perfect.
An LA recommendation:
Forma – Italian restaurant in Santa Monica. Definitely some of the best Italian food I have had outside of New York/Italy.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
From a mentorship standpoint – I have to give full credit to the Interscope team. Specifically Neil Jacobson, Ryan Roy, and Nick Groff. They have each been ahead of the curve consistently and have generously shared their time to help navigate me through an incredible tough industry.
From a book standpoint – I can’t recommend “How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie enough. I still have the principles taped to the mirror of my bathroom as I get ready every morning, reminding myself of how important these lessons are.
