Meet Bo Sapphire | Full Time Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bo Sapphire and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bo, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I think there is risk in everything. In my art career, especially this year, I’ve committed in doing art shows full time. Most of the art shows I’ve done so far, I did them for the first time. I remember in the beginning of the year, I’ve already planned out and paid for art shows up to July. It was a huge investment up front not knowing whether it’d be paid off or now. As a traveling artist, a lot of the stuff I do comes with risk. I’ve had some bad art shows where I didn’t make what I expected to be making; there was a time my car broke down while I was driving to a show; the last art show I’ve participated in, there was a strong wind that damaged a lot of artist’s artwork and canopies, I was lucky.
To me, taking risks is who I am. What is more important is how I handle the consequences or outcomes. I am really good at problem=solving, which make the risk-taking less scary.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an artist who makes botanical blueprints / cyanotype. It is an alternative photographic process developed back in the late 18th century. I work with plants that are grow from nature. My artwork is hand-printed with plants or flowers on a paper that I’ve painted the photographic solution on, and exposed using natural sunlight.
I’ve committed in doing art shows full time this year. I’ve travelled to so many places and few different States for art shows – Oregon, NorCal, Arizona. Being a traveling artist is a lifestyle I’ve chose for myself, and I love every second of it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I definitely would take them to go hiking at the Griffith Park, go visit Descanso Garden, check out some cool art at art galleries. Then we would take a camping trip for 2 or 3 nights somewhere in nature. If I happen to have an art show in the weekend, I would invite them to join me!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to thank my mom. She is my best friend and my hero. She has been supportive every step of the way since I started my art business. I want to thank my friends – Fei, DD, and Julia. They are my big support group. They are always there whenever I need them. I consider them my families.
