We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Herman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, what is the most important factor behind your success?
This question is easy for me. It’s the listeners. I’ve been saying for as long as I’ve been on the radio that a radio program is nothing without listeners. There are plenty of factors that contribute to the success of the Herman Radio Network and The Herman Show, but the listeners are the most important factor. I am beyond grateful for our solid base of listeners and supporters, some of whom have been following the show since its inception back in 2013.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been on the radio since 2013, when I was a sophomore in high school. I fell in love with radio immediately and it didn’t take long for me to realize that this was what I wanted to do for a living. I was on the radio at WLTL in La Grange, Illinois from 2013 to 2016. In 2013, I started hosting my music talk program, The Herman Show, and in 2015, I began having special guests on the show. My first guest was Jimy Sohns of The Shadows of Knight, who passed away in August of this year. From 2016 to 2019, I participated in college radio and continued to host my program. In 2019, I launched the Herman Radio Network with the extremely helpful assistance of some very talented colleagues and knowledgeable experts. The launch of the network resulted in The Herman Show being syndicated across the United States and Canada within one year. It definitely wasn’t easy; it took a lot of hard work, but it has also been a lot of fun. Over the years, I have conducted over 250 interviews with musicians for The Herman Show.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Personally, I love live music and I am regularly attending concerts. It would depend on who’s playing in town, but I’m sure a concert or two would be on the itinerary. They would also be welcome to check out WLTL. It’s not just any high school radio station; it’s a nationally recognized, award-winning program with state-of-the-art equipment. I’ve been involved at WLTL for the last nine years and I’m proud that WLTL is the home station of The Herman Show.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many people deserve credit for helping me get to where I am today. I can’t name everybody because there are a lot of people, so I’ll name two of the most impactful folks who have helped me along the way. Chris Thomas, who serves as the general manager of WLTL, is the man who put me on the air back in high school. If it weren’t for Mr. T and WLTL, I’m not sure whether we would be having this conversation. John Madormo was my general manager in college radio. There was never a shortage of invaluable knowledge and wisdom coming from John. I consider him a mentor. As far as I am concerned, he is the gold standard when it comes to management.
