We had the good fortune of connecting with Calm Buddy Box | Mindfulness for Kids Ash & Justine Williams and Robert & Erin Watts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Calm Buddy Box | Mindfulness for Kids, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

As parents of young children, we wanted to find a fun and creative way to help our children learn about mindfulness. Finding mindfulness strategies that work for our families has been beneficial in many ways but we’ve noticed that it is not talked about a lot within the Black community. We wanted to create something that could support and encourage the practice of mindfulness in our future generations, especially children within our Black and Brown communities.

Mindfulness helps support children’s wellbeing through the development of emotional and bodily awareness. For many within our community, mindfulness may be a new concept, as it really promotes the importance of “finding pause,” being present, and aware of ourselves and others, which can be difficult at times, especially in a fast-paced environment. All of this plays a role in community and generational healing; there’s a lot of great work being done to uplift communities in need and we’d like to believe that we can help move the needle, even ever so slightly to help bring awareness to the benefits of mindfulness and the importance of enjoying the present moment when and as much as we can. We all have something we are battling and mindfulness is definitely a way to help us with our inner child work – to become better parents, caregivers, parents, friends, and educators.

What should our readers know about your business?

We create and curate products that encourage mindfulness in young children! Inspired by our own kids and our professional work with children and families, we are passionate about planting seeds of mindfulness because it is a practical and obtainable way to help build children’s emotional wellness, empathy, gratitude, and self-esteem.

We are a group of young Black professionals who also happen to be two married couples, friends, and parents of five (total) children under the age of six. Practicing mindfulness has made a significant difference in our lives and in the lives of our children. With so much tragedy in today’s society, we really want to promote joy and overall well-being as much as we possibly can.

Getting to this point has not been easy; starting a small business has been met with many challenges and many lessons. Starting our own business has required us to believe in ourselves and continue pushing forward regardless of what challenges and curveballs come our way. We are also balancing business opportunities with our busy lives; we all have careers and young children so carving out time requires us to be very intentional about everything we do. It has definitely been a personal and professional growth experience for us all!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If we had a friend in town, our first stop would be at one of our favorite coffee shops – Blue Bottle, M Street Coffee, or Beignet Box. Next we would plan for a delicious brunch at one of our favorite brunch spots – Claudine’s Artisan Kitchen & Bakeshop, Garden Cafe, Red Maple, or Muffin Can Stop Us (if we want to grab a quick bite!). We love botanical gardens so if the weather is nice we would stop by The Huntington or the LA Arboretum. Both have lunch options. On a hot day, we might hit a museum such as The CAAM or The Broad. For dinner we would eat at Fixins or Guerilla Tacos in Downtown LA or head to Malibu for a meal/drinks at Malibu Cafe. The beach is also a great place to end the day!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We want to shout out our friend, Danielle Gautt, who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and owner of Emerge Counseling, Consultation, and Wellness Services where she empowers Women of Color to unlock their healthiest and happiest version of themselves. We have been inspired by her journey and her work!
