We had the good fortune of connecting with Calvin Davis Jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calvin, how do you think about risk?
I view risk in a positive manner. I have taken many necessary risks in both my life and in my music career. I wholeheartedly trust in the process. I’ve learned that things may not always go as expected, but as long as you keep a positive mindset and learn from the experiences thrown your way, you will grow and evolve. I embrace being in uncomfortable and challenging situations. Taking risks are meant to scare you and overcoming this fear is your VIP ticket to experiencing new and exciting things. This is where you learn some of life’s most valuable lessons. You are able to self reflect and build self awareness, which, in turn, builds character. This pandemic has inspired me to innovate how I market myself and my music to fans. Being a risk taker gives you the ability to analyze situations and gives you the perspective into your own capability. I am a firm believer in taking the necessary risks when you are passionate about something. After all, if you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary! And ordinary is the last thing I want!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an artist, songwriter and producer from The Bay Area, now residing in Los Angeles. I cross Rap and Hip Hop with R&B and Pop. Growing up, I listened to so many genres and it has influenced me to incorporate different elements into my sound. My biggest accomplishment is what my team and I have been able to accomplish independently. As an independent artist, you will have a lot of roadblocks, but I have always had the mindset, “Watch me.” My team and I have been trendsetters and have generated millions of streams on our own. This made me an attractive artist and landed me a publishing deal with PULSE Music Group. This allows me to be in the company of other talented artists. My determination and perseverance have gotten me to where I am today. You have to understand that life has ups and downs. Even when you’re at your lowest, you have to own the day and believe in yourself. My path has not been perfect. It’s an understatement that I am thankful for all the obstacles that have been thrown my way. I have never given up. Through my music, I hope to convey this to my listeners. In an industry that can be cut throat, I pride myself on treating people with respect. As an artist, I always want to be real. I believe that being organic will set me apart from others and will take me through the journey I want to go on. I will always be genuine because I believe in keeping your head up, being conscious of the energy you give out and the energy you connect with. My story and my brand is what I want the world to know about me! Hard work, passion, and dedication are the keys to my success. I want to be an inspiration to all. I want people to know that strength comes from within. That, in combination with self belief and respect for your neighbor, will open up limitless possibilities in this world. I am excited that I can influence culture through my music, by uplifting, building up individuals, and empowering others. I was created in order to create. I’m hoping you’re excited for the releases we have in the coming weeks!
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
If it were pre-corona, I would definitely recommend numerous nightclubs-Poppy or Bootsy Bellows to be specific- they are two of my favorite venues in the city. I love nature and Los Angeles has some really cool outdoor spots that I would recommend as well like Runyon Canyon and the Santa Monica Pier. If you go further south along the coast you can find some pretty cool beaches that aren’t as touristy. Beverly Hills and Fairfax/Melrose are great places to shop from designer to thrift, you can get some dope outfits for sure. My favorite restaurants in LA are Tatsu Ramen, Three Boarders Brunch & Grill, Blue Jam Cafe, SugarFish & RoRo’s. Hot spots to have drinks that I like are EP LP, Petite Taqueria, SoHo House, Toca Madera & Harriets Rooftop. One of the main reasons why I love living L.A is having access to all of the great eateries and lounges, it really is a lifestyle.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout my business partner/ best friend Clayton Ward who’s been putting in all the hours along with me and building a music business together that we’re passionate about and enjoy working on everyday. He’s also my engineer so a lot of credit goes to him for developing my sound and career in general!
