We had the good fortune of connecting with Calvin Leonard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calvin, why did you pursue a creative career?
To be honest I think it chose me. As funny as that may sound. I have always been into visual arts. Photography was something that I always admired. I was going through anxiety and pretty much the camera got me out of the house and got me going. I ended up getting good and loving being behind the camera. It’s almost like therapy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others? I’ll say drive and determination and the respect for the art of photography. I noticed a lot of photographers get into the game for clout. This is something I actually love and respect. No disrespect to anyone else but that’s just the way I see it. It wasn’t easy to get to where I am today. A lot of self doubt and hard work went into it all. I’ve been doing for photography around 6 years. And I’m barely starting to peak. Far as in where I want to be. Photography has taught me a lot of lessons. First and foremost how to be patient. I want the world to know that if you put your mind to anything you can do it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I know this may sound boring. But I’m going to take them to a few museums. Check out some art galleries here in Los angeles. Los Angeles is full of creatives and artists. So it’s a lot to see when it comes to art. There is also a few good bars in the Silver Lake Area great music and great atmosphere. There is also Venice Beach and Santa Monica Beach you can’t go wrong if the weather’s nice.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m going to have to say my mother Charlotte leonard. She’s had my back every step of the way and encourage me to keep going and not give up when times were hard.
