We had the good fortune of connecting with Carla Rosso and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carla, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Where I’m from isn’t a simple answer for me. I was born in Puerto Rico my parents are from the Dominican Republic and I was raised in Miami, Fl. All of these colorful rich Caribbean culture run in my veins.as a Makeup artist I love playing with color and textures which remind me of the vibrant Caribbean. I love dewy fresh skin, like you were just drenched in the Miami humidity beach wind. My background play a huge role in my life. So even in the dry LA heat I try and bring the misty beachy breeze.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Makeup Artist for TV, Film, Beauty Editorial, and FX makeup. I enjoy doing it all, from an editorial to monster making. I thrive at being creative! I am very appreciative for every opportunity that I have had. I love what I do! What sets me apart is my attention to detail, creativity, and personality. Talent will get you to the door, but your personality will keep you there. It is very important for me to set the mood in the makeup room as I always have a smile that exudes positivity. No matter what look I am creating, I enjoy keeping conversations fun, or deep, and being attentive to my client’s needs. The journey has not been easy though… I actually quit medical school to pursue my dreams. Going against my family’s wishes was a challenge within itself. Being told by numerous people, I was “throwing my life away”, and I was going to just be another “starving artist”. Hearing these comments only fueled me to push harder, be determined, and relentless. However, little did I know, that was only the beginning of other challenges coming my way. First, I made the move to California almost 10 years ago. Secondly, I was a struggling artist, which I felt everyone was right that I had thrown “my life away”. Thirdly, I was facing the competition of thousands of other talented Makeup artist with the same burning passion as me. As I struggled to make ends meet, bills needed to be paid. I was a babysitter which provided me with limited income to barely afford a meal a day if that.
In addition, I worked makeup jobs with no compensation, but to network, show my skills and display my work ethic. There were many days I felt like giving up and going back to Miami, but then I would have validated everyone’s opinion. It created a chip on my shoulder to prove everyone wrong. I allowed it to fuel me to go “harder”, to NEVER GIVE UP! I knew I had to show up to every job and give 100% of myself. Now, I am proud of myself for my determination and work ethic as it has taught me I can face any challenge and succeed.
I would love the world to know, that whatever you want to achieve in life. You got to believe in yourself. With grit, perseverance, hard work and determination- You can achieve the life you want! But you got to do the Work!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well some of my favorite spots in LA has to be the amazing Hikes! I love the trails in Malibu where you have the view of the ocean and the mountains. Love hanging out at The Grove for shopping and you can’t miss out on Catch LA for the best brunch!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I really want to thank God for guiding me in this journey.
