We had the good fortune of connecting with Catherine Alonso and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Catherine, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In 2009, after being in the Banking industry for over 15 years, I had the opportunity to become a stay at home mom. This was the first time since high school that I was not in a corporate setting. It was a new experience for me, but the time gave me the opportunity to explore my creativity. I knew I wanted to create something meaningful; I just didn’t know where to start. When my mother was diagnosed with skin and breast cancer, I realized the importance of what we put on our skin and the impact it has on our overall health. I started my research and discovered handmade soap and skincare products. I read anything I could find on different all natural ingredients used in the process and was intrigued. It was then that I found my passion and decided to pursue my business full-time.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am very proud of how far I’ve come from when I started. The path has not been easy and I have been challenged along the way. I love creating new products and trying different things. Everything is a learning process, and although there is a lot of trial and error, it is all about personal and professional growth.
I’m excited to share that after 11 amazing years working under the Light of Beauty brand we are in the process of rebranding to Calavera Rose. Our new brand is now a trademarked name which will allow us to grow and expand our business to shoppers worldwide. There is still so much to learn from the creative side and the business aspect. I’m excited about the future of our new brand and the opportunity to grow my business.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I grew up in the LA area near Hollywood and later moved to the San Fernando Valley. I would definitely visit the Magic Castle in Hollywood. Beautiful venue, great food, drinks and outstanding performances by amazing magicians. Next stop, Got Sushi & King’s Burger in Reseda. You’d never think you would be ordering great sushi at a burger joint, but everyone is always pleasantly surprised at the quality of the sushi at this place! Last but not least, a visit to the Griffith Park Observatory, the perfect place to take in the beautiful city views.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the love and support of my family and friends.
