We had the good fortune of connecting with Catherine Gray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Catherine, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Growing up in the bigoted South and being a gay person- really shaped how I show up in the world as a champion for the underdog. If more people could put themselves in the shoes of people unlike themselves, I think the world would be a better place. As a film producer, my entire life has been focused on how we use the powerful medium of tv and film to help change culture in a positive way. It is why I make documentaries like “I Can’t Marry You” about same sex marriage that aired on PBS- to my most current project I’m working on launching on streaming networks called SHE ANGELS. The series is about how we address the issue of the severe underfunding of women entrepreneurs. I recently did a TEDx Talk about this called FUND WOMEN- SAVE THE WORLD- because in the funding world- women are clearly the underdog- receiving less than 3% of venture capital funding. I am passionate about providing solutions to help level the playing field. with regard to funding women, people of color and the LGBTQ community business owners- who have game changing ideas that will impact our planet in a positive way. Recently we launched the SHE ANGEL FOUNDATION to provide grants to female founded nonprofits that are helping women. And my weekly podcast IINVEST IN HER- was created as a platform to provide resources to female entrepreneurs- to help them grow and scale their businesses. As for solving this underfunding issue- I believe it starts with women investing in women. Women control more than 30% of the world’s wealth, which translates into trillions of dollars. We got this!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business site, SheANGELinvestors.com, is a multi media platform to fund and empower women! Our entity is built on the idea that women need to help women to soar. I have always like that saying that the best way to manifest what you want, is to help others manifest what they want. That is what SHE ANGELS is all about. When visitors come to our site they can get our free white sheet entitled ‘SIX WAYS TO FUND YOUR BUSINESS’. They can also apply to our SHE ANGELS Pitch fest and Series for free- if they are seeking funding and mentorship. Also free on the site, is a wealth of information on our INVEST IN HER Podcast series- where we feature phenomenal female founders and funders who provide resources to help you grow your business. And finally, you can become a member of our SHE ANGELS FOUNDATION, wherein you can make a tax deductible donation to become a member, and attend our online and in person events for free. An opportunity to help other women to soar, while also meeting the extraordinary, powerful, smart and altruistic people who make up our community. Everything at SHE ANGELS is about meeting a critical unmet need to fund women- and to level the playing field. If this speaks to you- we welcome you to be part of our vision and movement called FUND WOMEN- SAVE THE WORLD.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This year during Covid-19, I had the good fortune of being able to set up my non-profit arm called SHE ANGELS FOUNDATION- which was created to provide grants to female founded nonprofits that are helping women to thrive! It was one of my original SHE ANGEL investors from my first pitch fest event to fund women, that helped me start it. I’m so grateful to have teamed up with Catherine Curry Williams, who had already started a very successful nonprofit twenty years ago- with her husband Scott Williams, called Shane’s Inspiration. Catherine has an amazing background of giving back and has been recognized with many awards for her amazing accomplishments- such as being recognized as a L’Oréal Paris Woman of Worth.. We both saw a critical unmet need to fund women in both the profit world, and the nonprofit world. I’m so happy to share that so many women became members that we exceeded our 2020 budget goals and were able to give out four grants to well deserving nonprofits already. Those included; 1- The People’s Pottery Project started by artist Molly Larkey to help formerly incarcerated women get back on their feet by learning the pottery trade. The very cool products are sold on the site and Molly employs these ladies. 2- Hope Gardens= is a wonderful multi acreage site that helps house, feed, and educate women of domestic violence to give them a leg up and a new start. 3- Women in Media is a nonprofit that created a directory of women in the film industry- so that movie and tv productions can find and hire women for productions jobs above and below the line- from directors to sound to gaffers. There is no excuse now for not having women on your crew! 4- Chefs for Humanity provides a Female Chef internship with Celebrity TV Chef Cat Cora- wherein she provides an apprenticeship for a female chef to learn the restaurant business. Since only 7% of restaurants are owned by female chefs, Cat Cora is on a mission to help change that- and so are we! All this and we are just getting started. We believe it is about women helping women, and men getting behind their sisters, daughters, wives and friends! Anyone can join us at www.SheAngelsFoundation.org and attend our online and in person salons throughout the year, which are free for members!
