We had the good fortune of connecting with Cecily Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cecily, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
I’ll give this the old Sound of Music treatment – these are a few of my favorite things: My two dogs – Tucker, a 9-year-old beagle (sad boy), and Riley, a 9-year-old miniature pinscher mix (sassy old lady) whom we recently rescued. They are my babies! Dessert in any form – I’ve always had an insatiable sweet tooth, and I love to bake! Miniature objects – what can I say they just tickle me. Solo dance parties in my room – it’s nice to remember that you can create your own party whenever you want. Snapping 35mm photos around my neighborhood – I love using my Fuji TW-300 point and shoot camera for quickly capturing anything that jumps out at me on a walk around the hood. Breakfast food – my favorite meal! Watching scary movies with my partner – popcorn and campy special effects are a must! Cruising along the PCH – As an East Coast transplant, I will simply never get over the beauty of the California coast! If this past year has taught me anything, it is to really lean into and take joy in the simple things, and to acknowledge what you are grateful for. Practicing these things has really brought more happiness into my life!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Photographer, Videographer, and all-around creative professional! I often work with local artists and brands to show their products, creative processes, and mission statements in action through strategic content creation. My work has a lot to do with finding joy in small details and bringing those discoveries to life with my camera. To me, it’s all about translating what I feel into imagery and bringing the personality out of my subject. Whether I use light or props to create a sense of personality or work to bring it out of my muse, I am always looking to highlight the humor, beauty, and emotion in my subjects. Over the last year or so I have been honing my technical lighting skills and discovering how much I enjoy manipulating light to convey feelings and add depth to my work. I also get a huge kick out of using whatever is available to me in unexpected ways to experiment and push my artistic boundaries. I would like the world to know that whether I’m styling an intricate set for a product campaign, photographing a client for fresh new headshots, or capturing the mood of an event, my first priority is to create work that is authentic, joyful, and poignant. I love every part of working with my clients to translate their personality and values into imagery that authentically represents them, and that’s the story I want to tell!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When anyone visits me, the first thing I do is drive them up the PCH and into the Malibu mountains. For me, that is the quintessential “California” experience! Before the pandemic, I would take them to R+D Kitchen in Santa Monica for a Ding’s Chicken Sandwich (the best fried chicken sandwich you’ll ever have!). I’d also make sure we hit up the Daiso market in Sawtelle – I LOVE a good dollar store experience, especially one that is chocked full of surprisingly useful household items and endless gag gifts! Another favorite activity would be going to a show, hopefully, at The Hollywood Bowl, The Hollywood Palladium, or The Echo. Seeing live music at any of the local venues is half the reason I liver here. Another must for me is checking out the Melrose Trading Post or the Rose Bowl Flea Market if possible! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It’s really hard to narrow it down to ONE person, as I’ve been so lucky to have the support of so many friends, family, and co-workers throughout my life! But since I have to choose, I’ll give a big shoutout to my best friend and partner, Sam Mank. I am so lucky to count on him for his friendship, sound advice, genuine encouragement, challenging creative feedback, and endless amounts of love and patience as I navigate my career as a visual artist. We make a great team and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
