We had the good fortune of connecting with Cherelle Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cherelle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process was like.. I can do this! I have a passion for fashion and I’ve already had experience managing multi-million dollar companies. I wanted to show my kids that its possible, this is possible and believing in yourself is a MUST!
What should our readers know about your business?
Growing up, I have always dreamed of running my own business one day. I watched a close family friend open her clothing store in Las Vegas and she ended up expanding across the city. I remember loving all of her fashion ideas. Her style always seemed to capture shoppers attention. Fashion became something I was truly passionate about.
I decided in order to run a business I had to work for one first! I didn’t start right off the bat running any companies, but I eventually worked my way into restaurant and entertainment management for years and loved every second of it, for the most part (haha). I think having children and realizing the small amounts of time I was getting to spend with them forced me to think of a way out of that industry.
My thought process was that I would work from home and still be there for them when they needed me. I didn’t want to leap off into something I was not passionate about. I remember selling some used clothes on Poshmark when the site was first created and instantly I sold my entire closet! Honestly, I was shocked that anyone would buy my clothes and slowly I got introduced into wholesale.
While living in the west coast, I would always see people showing off their bodies and hardly wearing anything because it’s SO HOT! I thought to myself, if only we could wear bikinis all year round then we’d be ok!
Do you know how hard it is to find a CUTE bathing suit that not everyone has? I kept that in mind and spent many nights doing some research of my own to build my brand. Currently, I am still in the process of continuously building to be recognized as a strong swimwear brand that many will wear and feel at their best. RelleySwim offers upscale and provocative looks for the authentic person, it’s what sets us apart from the rest. I’ve learned over time that building relationships and character really helps market your brand. This world is so small and the shelf life of leaving a bad impression or taste in someones mouth could last a lifetime! MOVE WISELY!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some cool spots in the city to:
Eat- Gracias Madre ( I love Mexican food!)
Drink- Tiki-Ti (for the cutest drinks ever!)
Visit- The Hollywood sign, Disneyland
Hang Out- Venice or Huntington Beach
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, my dad, my grandma and my brother “Shak” have been one of my strongest support systems. They’ve seen literally all of my seasons and have encouraged me to fight for what I want in this life.
Also, the power of social media is SO WILD! I met a group of strong business minded women who are also passionate about what they do, Complete strangers, but we always shared likes and comments on each others posts. One day, we all decided to team up in some way. So thank you Krista, Kam and Sky!
