We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris and Amanda Combs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris and Amanda, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
I think of a famous quote that says (Success is not final: Failure is not fatal and it is the courage to continue that counts… That was by Winston Churchill

If there is one thing I have learned from my career so far, it’s that I know what it feels like to fail, and I know what it feels like to succeed. I have been lucky over the years to work under some great minds in the food industry, taking those trainings and applying my own ideas has lead to this creation thus far. Solvang Flavors is still growing as a business. It is like a child that needs continuous nourishment and understanding, by listening to our customers and offering the best and highest quality product we can find, slowly, we find the true identity of our business.

We have stuck with our business model which is to create a Italian cafe experience, serving fresh made gelato in house, locally roasted espresso, Italian themed panini sandwiches, local wines, custom made chocolates by none other than Jean Michel Carre at Chocolats Du CaliBressan. That just scrapes the surface, we also serve fresh made crepe’s! Savory and sweet. Using a homemade recipe we can put pretty much anything in this crepe.

When we first opened, nothing is as it is now and I’m sure it will evolve even more as time goes on. We do our best and love what we do. The best par truly is seeing someone smile and enjoy the love the we have for food.

Anyone who ventures into the food service industry usually learns this lesson quickly. Its rare to get it right on the first try.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As soon as our guests walk in our doors, we see faces light up like children walking into Disneyland. We offer purity and flavor with unsurpassed quality. Who can ask for anything more?

Growing up as musicians Amanda and I both thrive on being creative, in all aspects of our lives. Its something we cannot live without. For years I had said, If I could just play music, teach golf, and work in food than I would be living my dream. And for the last couple years, We have been doing just that. I am a professional golf instructor working at The Mission Club in Lompoc Ca. Truly inspired by food and the creative process that goes along with that has brought us to Flavors. We are constantly, innovating and creating new flavors for our patrons to try. It is so much fun for me to watch someone try our Lavender Honey Gelato…..not sure of what to think, and then they love it! It is fast becoming one of our best sellers. Who would have thought?

Maintaining theses high standards can at times be exhausting, and its not always easy, however it is worth it. We are proud of the product we serve and feel good about the ingredients we are using.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
