We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Clifford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always wanted to start my own business. Growing up around entrepreneurs, there’s really no other train of thought. After chasing opportunities over the years, entrepreneurship to me became more about “why” I am doing what I am doing. I’m passionate about people’s mental health, and I saw the way that plant-based medicine, cannabis specifically, positively impacted the lives of people close to me. And so, my work with Day One comes from that place. CBD emerges from the cannabis space, but it is a non-psychoactive ingredient that can help with day-to-day anxiety, stress, and productivity. So, I saw an opportunity to make a company that strives to bring the non-psychoactive benefits of cannabis to people across the country, at a time when they’re needed more than ever. CBD and its association with cannabis is an introduction to many consumers who are eager to develop a deeper relationship with alternative wellness solutions that have proven to be incredibly beneficial to mental health. CBD has played a vital role in reversing the stigma around cannabis; therefore, our goal has been to make the most accessible products possible.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The most important factor contributing to Day One’s success is timing. We’re on a mission to democratize CBD, and the contemporary moment is calling for that. It has never been more difficult to control your attention, anxiety is at an all-time high, and there is a recession looming. Day One is a value-driven brand meeting people where they are; we make delicious & affordable CBD beverages for people who might be unfamiliar with it while striving to educate them on how it can be incorporated into a daily routine. And while innovation and establishing new markets really do depend on timing, humility and persistence are equally as important. I’ve been a part of companies that have failed, and I’ve had to will myself to start again many times. Inevitably, what helps me start again is a great team with a shared desire to make a positive impact. I’ve learned that, in order to run a company, you have to acknowledge your shortcomings & surround yourself with people that make up for those, and then some. Humility is letting go of control and empowering your team to step up and execute.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle is a book that really impacted me, and its lessons are a part of the DNA of Day One. What the book says to me is that you don’t have to regret the past or have anxiety about the future; all we have is the present, and that is where happiness comes from. Day One is when everything is in balance, and we want to preach the same principles found in Tolle’s book with our brand. I want the brand name “Day One” to serve as a daily prompt, reminder, or mantra; not in the sense that you’re going to drink our sparkling water with CBD and become a Zen Buddhist, but that it can be a daily reminder with any task at hand, or a way of giving yourself fully to whatever it is you’d like to start on.
