We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Ouk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
The most difficult decision I have ever had to make in my life is to quit the 9 to 5 rat-race in order to pursue my art career. I wanted to be able to support myself through my paintings. At the time I did not know exactly how to get the business started, I only knew how to paint. Not having any connection in the art world, no income and no savings gave me the motivation to work hard and persevere. I did not have a choice but to keep going no matter what. There was a lot of struggle making ends meet .I found that it was really important to believe in yourself and to only have positive people around me. It took some time, but eventually things began to work out.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Artist/creative My artwork is about life’s journey. There is a starting point and an ending point and in-between is that journey that are made up of the choices we make. Some people know exactly where their destination is and just has to follow that path while others only have a vague idea and from there they are influenced by many things along the way. This is how my painting works. Depending on my state of mind, these are the paths which lead to the finished work. What sets my work apart is from life’s experiences. I draw from my journey as a refugee. I am fascinated by landscapes and sceneries. Having been born in Asia where it is just lush green jungles and vibrant colors everywhere, I cannot help but have these elements in my work. Nature just moves me. I am proud just to be alive. Every afternoon (I go to sleep very late) when I open my eyes, I am excited by life. Here is another day that is a blank canvas to be filled with whatever you like. I do not know if I am a professional, I just know that there’s nothing else that I would rather do than what I do. I have been an artist since the very first time I ever held a pencil ( which was at the age of 7) after arriving in America. I am thankful for all the people that have supported me over the years by collecting and commissioning my work. They have made my journey less difficult. Along the way, I have learned that art, family and life are one and the same. Art is just a reflection of family and life. It is every person’s journey from the time that he is born until he expires. Art captures different moments of our time on earth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are many beautiful and cool spots in LA. Where I would take my friend that’s visiting depends on what they like. I tend to spend most of my time in Venice. LA has something for everyone.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people that have crossed path with me that has one way or another touched my heart, but the people that have always been with me since the beginning is my family.
