We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Urquiaga (JChris) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, what do you attribute your success to?
I think that the most important factor behind my success was building the right team around me. Without my team, I would not have been able to create the polished, edgy songs and videos I released.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I got to where I am today by playing the live music circuit consistently from the beginning. I learned a lot of lessons along the way. Playing the circuit made me a more seasoned, experienced musician. It made my experience in recording a lot easier. I am now able to get great takes in only a few tries. It was not easy starting out as a musician. It took a lot of trial and error on my part. It took a lot of toiling and making mistakes to get ahead. But I learned and I grew as an artist along the way. In the early days of my career, it was only me doing everything for my business. Now I have a professional team helping me do things. My team created and edits my website, created my visual brand, edits my music videos, creates promotional videos, makes social media posts, and sends out emails for me, among other things. It took a long time to get to this point, but I am grateful for all that I went through because the hardships strengthened me and gave me wisdom.

It is not easy being a musician. But for all of you out there who wants to be a professional musician, I say to you, stay encouraged! Things will be rocky in the beginning but I promise you that it will get better the more you keep going.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If they were visiting me in the DC/Baltimore area, I would take them to the National Monument, all of the Smithsonian museums, the Tidal Basin, U Street, Adam’s Morgan, DC Zoo, Baltimore Aquarium, Fell’s Point in Baltimore.

If they were visiting me in NYC, I would take them to Bronx Zoo, Casa La Femme in NYC for awesome Egyptian food, Prospect Park, Central Park, World Trade Center, the Statue of Liberty, take them to see a Broadway show, take them iceskating if it’s in the wintertime, Rockefeller Center, Columbus Circle, Times Square, Comedy Cellar, St. John the Divine, Riverside Park, and Williamsburg in Brooklyn for nightlife.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank everyone who supported me along the way. Without those who bought tickets to my show, bought my merch and hired me for shows, I would not have come this far. I also thank the organizations that featured me as an artist to build my brand up. All of your support means a lot to me!
