We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christopher, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Born to a Chinese family in Vietnam and raised in Los Angeles, both my parents were entrepreneurs. They believed honesty, discipline and hard work are the key elements to success, and I implement their teachings in every aspect of my life on a daily basis.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photography has been part of my life since I was seven. My parents had a one-hour photoshop in Los Angeles where I would help out on weekends processing films the old-fashioned way before we had digital cameras. It wasn’t until I started working as a Floral Designer in the Event Industry that I discovered my passion for photography. I started by snapping photos with my smartphone whenever I came across something that inspired me. I found it was a creative medium that allowed me to capture and express those special moments of life in a way only a camera lens can. Friends, family and co-workers started noticing my work and suggested that I should consider making photography a career. So I got myself a professional camera and made the switch.
Self-taught, my images draw inspiration from landscapes and architecture. My style of photography is influenced by organic compositions with a mix of fashion and photojournalism. My images feel natural and editorial.
I specialize in interiors, but I also photograph architecture, landscapes, gardens, events and lifestyle – families, couples, headshots and pets.
Good lighting is essential and I love working with natural light whenever possible because it produces the best images.
I pride myself on image quality, professionalism, attention to detail and client relationships. I’m grateful that I can do what I love for a living.
My approach is design-driven to capture the beauty and essence of the clients’ work. Whether it’s modern, traditional or boho, I work closely with clients (interior designers, architects, developers/builders and product companies) to build their brand and tell their story. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My grandmother ‘Ama’ and my mother both inspired me to do what I do today. Ama was always spending her time in the garden tending her herbs and vegetables. My Mom, on the other hand, was a great chef. She taught me how to cook. Their love and passion for life, nature and beauty, continue to inspire my creative endeavors.
And much appreciation goes to all of my amazing clients–you know who you are. Thank you for the opportunities, trust in the quality of my work, and your continued support.
