We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Fretwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
The most difficult decision I’ve had to make was to leave my full-time, secure, cushy government job. I thought my career and future was set when I landed my dream job working for the government. They offered a nice retirement package, easy hours, and all the perks we wish for in a career. Except, I wasn’t working towards my dream, I was working towards someone else’s dream. I started my podcast, Forensic Tales, in January 2020. I just finished my masters degree from Arizona State University and was comfortable in my government job. Starting a business and a podcast was my dream but the hours spent at my full-time job took time away from pursuing my passion. So, to fix that problem, in July 2020, I quit my job. I left the pension behind, the salary, and took a leap of faith. It wasn’t an easy decision. I knew what I would be risking and the things that I’d be giving up. But, what made the decision easier was when I thought of the things I’d be gaining. I’d be receiving the opportunity to pursue my own dreams and passions, not someone else’s. I’d have the time to invest in Forensic Tales podcast and my company. Something I’d never have working the 9 to 5. Sometimes the most difficult decisions, become the easiest decisions. Since making the decision to quit, my podcast has grown tremendously and I’ve never felt so fulfilled both personally and professionally.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m the creator and host of Forensic Tales podcast. Forensic Tales is a weekly true crime podcast with a forensic science twist. Each episode of the show we cover a new case. Some cases have been solved by cutting edge forensic techniques, while other cases remain cold cases. After completing a masters degree in Forensic Psychology from Arizona State University, I wanted to share my knowledge and passion for criminology with others who share similar interests. I’d always been a big listener of other true crime podcasts, but I’d always been too scared to create my own show. Would anybody even listen to the show if I did? What if people didn’t like it? These questions swirled in my head until I told my fiancé, Tony, that I was thinking of starting my own business and launching a podcast. After pitching the show concept to him, he immediately went out and purchased Pat Flynn’s “Power Up Podcasting” course to provide all the tools I needed to get started. After he purchased the course, I thought… Oh Crap. This just got real. I’m really starting my own podcast and business. I went from having no clue about how to start a podcast. I didn’t know what type of microphone to use. I had no idea how to record or edit an episode. No experience building a website. And, how do you get people to listen and subscribe to your podcast? Today, I produce and host a podcast that has hundreds of thousands of downloads across the world within 10 months of launching it. I quit my full-time, cushy government job with the nice pension to pursue my own dreams, not someone else’s. And now, I work full-time for own business, Forensic Tales podcast.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Irvine, CA is the best place in the entire world to live. It’s always sunny and it’s one of the safest places to live. The best beaches are just minutes away. There are also so many great places to eat and explore new spots.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My journey into becoming a producer and a host of a true crime podcast wouldn’t be possible without my amazing fiancé, Tony. Sometimes when you share your craziest and wildest dreams with someone, they laugh at how crazy it sounds. When I told Tony I wanted to start my own business and podcast, he didn’t laugh. Instead, he went out and purchased me “Power Up Podcasting Course” by Pat Flynn. Thank you for always believing in me! I love you.
