Meet Damien Curry | Musician, Producer, Composer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Damien Curry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Damien, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I hate to sound like “Captain Positive”, but I generally approach risks with the mindset of – what’s the best that can come from this, rather than the worse. Failure is so easy to calculate and envision. Our minds are powerful and we can create whatever reality we focus on. In my opinion there is no place for being risk-adverse when it comes to innovation. Whatever the medium of innovation is, some sort of risk is required. I would say that literally everything that I’ve been successful at has been wildly terrifying and/or intimidating at first.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Interestingly, I’m the most proud of my current musical creations. They’re the culmination of 20+ years juggling a 9-5, ghostwriting for various network television shows, and honing my own sound for my personal projects. I have a profound sense of purpose right now and I feel like I’m making “strong art”. If an artist wants to continue to evolve, then I believe you have to stay curios and consistent. Being a fan first is the most important part of being an artist. I feel like I’m always on the hunt for new music and new cultural experiences. And by “new” I’m not specifically referring to recently released music, but rather things that I’ve never heard before – old or new. I don’t think what we consider “classic” records are the only standard for sonic excellence – at least not in the way that the industry portrays them. There are some amazing new creators across the globe that are releasing sonic masterpieces into the world.
This is why I’m here. Genre agnostic, my goal is to push the boundaries of what exist, create something new, and to help inspire a generation of artists. Although my influences are probably not difficult to hear, I have no interest in being the clone of anyone. I realize this probably makes it more challenging for my music to gain traction, but this is my life’s work and I’m “10 toes down”, as they say.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In no particular order…
We’re starting with food! There’s a latin food night market that some friends hipped me to on the corner of Alameda and 4th in Downtown. I’m not sure the exact name of it, but you can’t miss it. I believe they’re open until 3am. Absolute fire!
In my humble opinion, the Valley has the best local mom & pop restaurants so I’d throw in a trip to all of the following – Coley’s Jamaican Food, Ay Papa Que Rico, Mexcocina Cafe, AJ’s Tex Mex, & Ramen Jinya. There are bunch more, but these are the mandatory stops.
Sunday nights should be dedicated to the best rooftop party in LA. On Sundays from 5-10pm, KG Superstar hosts an event called Utopia on a rooftop in Hollywood where he and a talented array of DJ’s play House music night for the people! The vibes are unmatched.
A solid beach day is a must. I’m a fan of the less crowded beaches, so I probably try to pull a group together and visit to Dockweiler or Zuma.
Descanso Gardens followed by a drive down the 2 Fwy into Downtown for a stroll through Fashion District.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow! I’m not sure I can list everyone! I’ll start with the first that come to mind.
Neal Pogue – My friend and family! All the words!
My longtime mentor – Michael Egizi. A brilliant musician & producer whose patience and gifts have been pivotal to my growth as an artist over the years.
