We had the good fortune of connecting with Daneya Mayid and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daneya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Opening up Mayid Martial Arts has been a life long dream of mine. In my thirty plus years as a martial artist, I always visualized the day I could open my own facility. I put a lot of time and effort into finding the right location. Thankfully I found my way to Northridge where I could not be happier. I am looking forward to showing the community the benefits our gym will provide.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What I am most proud of and what I think sets us apart from others, is the environment we have created at Mayid Martial Arts. I truly believe martial arts could be beneficial to people from all walks of life and of all ages. We provide a fun, safe, and welcoming environment. As an artist I feel that it is important for each person to be looked and as an individual, and should be encouraged to be themselves when expressing their art. Mayid Martial Arts is a safe space to explore yourself in.
Getting to this point in my career was not easy. There were many obstacles along the way. I have to credit my training as a martial artist when overcoming these obstacles. My lease for Mayid Martial Arts started for March 1st 2020. To say the least 2020 was a hurdle in getting my business going. Although I doubted if I would ever be able teach my first class in my own facility, I never gave up. My first instructor has a quote that has stuck with me over the years.
“The biggest obstacle in life is yourself. Overcome it, and you will have achieved the greatest accomplishment of all.”

Surviving 2020 as a new business is a testament to the benefits of martial arts. I believe whole heartedly that what our school has to offer will make our community happier, healthier, and a safer place in which to live.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family for always supporting this dream. My mother, father, sisters, brother and of course my beautiful wife and son. None of this would be possible without you all
